In a blog post, Blizzard commented on the current status of Diablo Immortal. It covered internal testing, the combat system, and how the game will proceed.
What about Diablo Immortal? Currently, the mobile game is approaching internal tests, where Blizzard employees can try out Diablo Immortal. Based on this feedback, the development of the title will continue.
The mid-year update emphasizes that the developers want to adopt the authentic combat system of the Diablo series. Generally, Diablo Immortal aims to set “new standards” for mobile games. However, it was not mentioned what this exactly will look like.
Instead, there were some new images and brief video sequences of the game.
What about public tests and release? Even though the many new images give the impression that the release is not far off, no details regarding tests and release were mentioned in the blog post. Officially, it is stated that these will be communicated at a later stage of development.
- However, as early as November 2019, it was stated that the developer NetEase was already done with the game. Blizzard later denied this.
- In February 2020, Rod Fergusson, who is referred to as “the Closer”, joined the team. He is supposed to advance Diablo Immortal and Diablo 4.
As it currently stands with internal testing and working from home, a release in 2020 seems unlikely, though not impossible.
Immortal aims to bring Diablo to smartphones in Blizzard quality
What can you expect from Diablo Immortal? The hack and slash game is being developed by Blizzard in collaboration with the Chinese developer studio NetEase. Blizzard emphasizes that the game will bring a “high quality” and will be a classic Diablo title.
To achieve this, it relies on:
- An intuitive control system on smartphones.
- Action-packed battles, where the traditional mana is eliminated
- Plenty of varied loot
- 6 playable classes
- A story that takes place between Diablo 2 and 3
However, Diablo Immortal is likely not to be the only mobile game from Blizzard. Dennis Durklin, CFO of Activision Blizzard, has already hinted that more of the company’s brands could receive mobile games.
