Dr. Alok “Dr K.” Kanojia offers conversations live on Twitch as HealthyGamer_GG. However, his conversations with a deceased WoW streamer have brought him into trouble.
What kind of doctor is he? Dr. Alok Kanojia is an American psychiatrist who appears online as “Dr. K”. Dr. K struggled with video game addiction during his studies and later founded the organization “Healthy Gamer”, which provides non-medical support and advice in the gaming community.
Under the name HealthyGamer_GG, Dr. K also streams on Twitch. In his streams, he talks to internet personalities, including well-known streamers like Asmongold and xQc. Although Dr. K deliberately does not refer to the conversations as therapy sessions, their therapeutic nature has been the subject of discussion for some time.
Among Dr. K’s conversation partners was also the deceased WoW streamer Byron “Reckful” Bernstein, who passed away in 2020. For this, the physician is apparently now facing difficulties.
Unclear relations between Reckful and Dr. K
What difficulties are there now? As announced on July 23, 2024, via X.com, the “Board of Registration in Medicine”, the licensing authority for physicians in Massachusetts, has taken disciplinary action against Kanojia. This apparently stems from a complaint dating back to February 2022.
The subject is the relationship between Dr. K and Reckful. A publicly accessible document on the state of Massachusetts website lists a total of 6 “interviews” that the physician conducted with the content creator on Twitch.
These discussed, among other things, suicidality, depression, and borderline personality disorder. In one of the conversations, the two discuss whether Dr. K is a therapist or a friend of Reckful. In a concluding live stream, the Twitch streamer mentioned that they would continue their conversations offline.
The “Board of Registration in Medicine” finds that Kanojia’s behavior undermines the “public’s trust in the integrity of the medical profession”. As a result, Dr. K’s medical license is “reprimanded”. This is roughly equivalent to a warning or reprimand in German (via Gesetze im Internet).
However, the board also noted that Dr. K complied with referral guidelines given the deterioration of Reckful’s mental health, including recommending treatment and providing guidance on accessing emergency services.
Dr. K may continue to practice
What consequences for Dr. K? Essentially, the psychiatrist only received a warning. His license is therefore not in danger. He can continue to practice and does not have to pay any fines. However, this warning will now permanently attach to his license and can be publicly accessed (via grgblaw.com).
In a post in the HealthyGamerGG subreddit, it is stated that corrective measures regarding problematic aspects of the “interviews” were taken even before the 2022 complaint, including a preliminary conversation to set boundaries and the establishment of an advisory board.
