In Game of Thrones there are many conflicts between the Great Houses of Westeros. Who should you definitely have on your side in the game of thrones? Which region is the most powerful? In the ranking, we have sorted all kingdoms by their strength.
What are the Seven Kingdoms? In Game of Thrones, the “Seven Kingdoms” are often mentioned. At first glance, this may seem strange. Because at the time of the series, there are actually nine regions south of the Wall.
This is because the term derives from the “Seven Kingdoms” into which Westeros was once divided. Then came Aegon Targaryen and conquered large parts of the land.
- The “Kingdom of Islands and Rivers” was divided into “The Riverlands” and “The Iron Islands.”
- The new capital King’s Landing and its surrounding area became its own region, which only belongs to the Crown.
This is how nine regions emerged from the seven kingdoms. However, the term “Seven Kingdoms” remained, even though it is actually outdated.
What criteria was the ranking based on? We look at all nine kingdoms and sort them by general strength. For example, the following factors are relevant:
- Size of the country
- Strength of the army
- Available resources like food or gold
- Independence
We consider the time around the beginning of the series.
Rank 9: The Crownlands
- House: Targaryen/ Baratheon/ Lannister
- Capital: King’s Landing
The Crownlands are somewhat the heart of Westeros. From the Iron Throne, the king rules over the entire kingdom. Ironically, this region is still at the bottom of this list.
At sea, the strength of the Crownlands is initially quite decent. The royal fleet of the Iron Throne is among the strongest maritime powers of Westeros. Only the fleets from the Iron Islands or the Reach could compete with it.
Additionally, King’s Landing, as the capital of the kingdom, is the center for culture and trade. The economy of the region is therefore very good.
The main problem, however, is that the Crownlands have by far the smallest army. They barely muster about 15,000 men. This is mainly because the population is generally very low. While King’s Landing is the largest city in Westeros, the rest of the region is sparsely populated.
Defending King’s Landing is also quite challenging. Compared to many other strongholds on this list, it is a city, not a fortress.
