Once Human has, according to MeinMMO editor Dariusz, a big problem with the server system. This complicates the entry for new players unnecessarily and ensures that the servers become increasingly empty.
Once Human was supposed to become “the better The Day Before” and launched as a big new survival game on Steam. Many players really like the title, but since the release, there have also been some discussions.
The gacha system and the privacy policies have been sharply criticized. Furthermore, many players were unhappy that at release, they could only create one character and could not delete it or switch servers. However, the developers quickly improved this.
However, I find the server choice at the start of the game much worse than the gacha system of Once Human. This has led me to leave the survival game aside for a few days, even though I wanted to play it.
The server selection from hell
There are several points that I do not like about the server choice of Once Human, making the entry into the game unnecessarily complicated. Moreover, this server choice leads to some servers becoming increasingly empty while others are bursting at the seams.
If you want to play Once Human on a PvE server, there are now over 100 servers available. These servers have two limitations: maximum player capacity and population count.
- If the upper limit of player capacity is reached, no more players can join the server.
- The population count is an indicator of how busy a server is at that moment, meaning how many players are online.
The crux is: There are now servers that are moderately visited even in the afternoon until early evening – when many players are usually online. In the game, the population shows “medium” or even “low.” Nevertheless, you cannot join these “empty” servers because the upper limit of players has been reached.
This leads to every new player having to go to one of the new servers. Therefore, there are now many players online there, and you sometimes even have to wait in queues – at least that was my experience.
Migration between servers
So there are now servers in Once Human that are almost empty and new players cannot join them anymore because the upper limit has been reached. Of course, the hype for the game is slowly fading, and players are playing something else. But there are also unused characters from still active players on the servers who merely switched servers.
The problem is: If you are on a server that has reached its upper limit, you cannot play with friends who are not on that server yet. You need to find a new server where your entire group can play. You then occupy a spot on both the old and the new server.
This is simply not a good system. I can ignore the gacha system. The server system is something new players inevitably have to deal with.
