Today, sales of the RTX 3070, Nvidia’s smallest Ampere graphics card, start. With this, Nvidia aims to complete its Ampere offerings and also offer a graphics card for interested buyers at the lower end. In our article, we introduce when the graphics card will officially be available for purchase and whether buying the GeForce RTX 3070 will be worth it for you.
At what time does sales start? On October 29, 2020, at 2 PM German time, you can order the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070.
You can choose either the Founders Edition or one of the custom cards, which should also be available for order from 2 PM.

Pre-order RTX 3070 – will there be enough graphics cards?
That’s why you should be quick: At least one retailer, Proshop, complained about low availability of the RTX 3070. We can’t tell you how well the cheapest graphics card will be available today, as reliable numbers are still missing.
Nvidia had promised improvement after the chaos of the RTX 3080 and postponed the release of the GeForce RTX 3070 to October 29 to ensure better availability (via nvidia.com).
One thing is for sure: the RTX 3070 will be in high demand, just like the RTX 3080 was. Because the RTX 3080 was sold out quickly and bots ruined the business for interested parties. And even the GeForce RTX 3090, which costs 1500 dollars, was sold out very quickly.

GeForce RTX 3070 in review: Who is the purchase worth for?

The purchase of an RTX 3070 could also be worthwhile for users of the Turing generation (RTX 2000 series), who can expect an increase in performance of 20%.
Those who still use the earlier 1000 generation can look forward to the doubled performance of the graphics card.
GameStar: High performance, but limited video memory
The colleagues from GameStar praise the high performance of the graphics card in their review. Nils Raettig writes, “With the GeForce RTX 3070 in the test, Nvidia delivers performance at the level of the RTX 2080 Ti at a significantly lower price. That’s pretty impressive and a real statement.”
The biggest problem the RTX 3070 has is with video memory, as it could be too limited for 4K in the long run. If AMD’s new Radeon graphics cards offer “clearly more video memory at a reasonable price, that could be serious competition.”
By now, we know since the AMD presentation that the new Radeon graphics cards all come with 16 GB of video memory. The cheapest AMD graphics card will be priced at 579 US dollars but will be somewhat more expensive than Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070. However, AMD’s graphics cards first need to prove themselves in independent tests.
ComputerBase: For 500 euros, the RTX 3070 is currently unmatched
ComputerBase sees the RTX 3070 as a similarly strong product as the testers from GameStar. For 499 dollars and the shown performance, the GeForce RTX 3070 offers the best price-performance ratio of all Ampere graphics cards.
For entry into Ultra-HD, the performance is high enough, but if you want to play at a constant 60 FPS, you have to either reduce the details or eventually resort to the currently sold-out RTX 3080.
Wolfgang Andermahr writes in the ComputerBase review about the RTX 3070:
Apart from the memory, the GeForce RTX 3070 does everything right: The overall package of performance, features, energy efficiency, and noise level is as well-done as it was with the GeForce RTX 3080. For 500 euros – if the graphics card is really available at that price in larger quantities soon – the GeForce RTX 3070 is unmatched. But for how long?

HardwareLuxx: Enormous increase in performance compared to the Pre-Turing generation
HardwareLuxx explains in its review that the RTX 3070 is a huge leap forward. While the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition “struggles with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti – it is usually between 5 and 10% slower than the previous top model.” That’s a statement, as the GeForce 2080 Ti costs over 1200 euros, more than twice as much as the RTX 3070.
Andreas Schilling writes: “In addition to the raw performance, the GeForce RTX 3070 also delivers RTX and DLSS performance on the level of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and allows players to experience a performance class with additional effects that was previously unthinkable for 500 euros.”
RX 6800 as an alternative to the RTX 3070?
By now, AMD has also introduced its new line-up of graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6900 XT.
Especially the RX 6800 could become a strong alternative to the GeForce RTX 3070. Although it costs 579 US dollars, it offers double the video memory. However, there are still no independent reviews of the RX 6800.
