Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been making waves since its release. The game is the first title from the developer studio Sandfall Interactive. Therefore, no one expected the game to hit so hard and reach a new milestone, including the developers themselves.
What has the game achieved now? Clair Obscur is one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic – at least when considering the user score. Currently, the title stands at a 9.7 / 10 possible points based on 1,784 user ratings (As of April 27, 2025, at 9:00 AM).
Unfortunately, the search function that sorts by user scores is somewhat confusing. Therefore, it is hard to determine whether the RPG is the highest-rated game overall. However, while browsing known all-time favorites and the games that appear on the first pages, we did not notice any title with a better user rating than 9.6.
The only two games that we stumbled upon are Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst and Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. Both have a rating of 9.6 and only 10 users who rated them. Clair Obscur thus has a significantly higher user score than the other games.
Even The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Witcher 3, and The Last of Us do not score higher than 9.2. However, many more ratings have come in, ranging between 10,000 and 18,000. Theoretically, it is possible that Clair Obscur may drop with more ratings. But currently, it is the best game of all time, according to fans.
Developers can hardly believe it
How did the developers react? On X, the team behind Clair Obscur responded to a tweet in which it is called the best game of 2025 with the highest user score on Metacritic. The developers can hardly believe it and simply respond: “all… all time?”
And also to another tweet, in which another article on the same topic is linked, the team can only respond with a “WHAT”. They are presumably overwhelmed by how well Clair Obscur is received by fans and still cannot comprehend the attention the game is attracting.
What do fans say about it? The comments on posts on X that received many likes are happy for the developers:
- MarcusBuffet: “It’s strange to be so happy for a team I know nothing about. I hope you are celebrating this absolutely incredible rating. Honestly, it could be the best game I’ve ever played.”
- elvenmaidinn: “Passion will always be above greed.”
- PaddyohCakes: “A turn-based game that is back at the top of the charts? People are yearning for tabletop in a way that they cannot put into words. So, they put it into code.”
However, there are also some voices that have only heard of the title so far but have not played it yet. Some commenters added that they decided to start playing the remastered version of Oblivion. This RPG also takes several hours, which is probably why it will take them some time before they can check out Clair Obscur.
