For a long time, there has been no MMORPG announcement where PvP and sandbox were not the focus. However, this trend is now changing drastically. All new announcements for existing and upcoming MMOs share a common thread that Alex, Schuhmann, and Leya discuss in the podcast.

If you look at the major MMO announcements of the last year, you quickly notice a pattern: PvP and a large sandbox were clearly at the forefront. Players were supposed to tell the story of their MMORPG through their interactions with each other:
- New World – launched as a pure PvP sandbox MMO with faction wars. However, Amazon Game Studios decided to shift towards PvE with a quest design and optional PvP.
- Ashes of Creation – here, large PvP faction wars are supposed to be the focus, with territorial conquest. Everyone is still eagerly awaiting the release, which is likely still a long way off.
- Crowfall – also Crowfall was supposed to take faction wars and PvP in MMORPGs to a new level by resetting faction wars back to zero repeatedly. However, the concept and game failed shortly after its release.
- Last Oasis – one of the many sandbox survival MMOs that promised ruthless PvP and quickly went under. The unique feature here were mobile bases, which you had to move through the world map like nomads.
These are just a few of the larger examples.
However, a new era is beginning. The new announcements for existing MMOs and upcoming games all share a common thread. With games like the existing Black Desert Online, or the new Palia and Crimson Desert, a change is coming our way.
