Rumors are circulating that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro or a PS6. A job listing is said to confirm this. It is at least not unusual for companies to already be working on a new generation after the release of a device.
The rumors persist that Sony is secretly working on a new PlayStation model. There is talk of both a PS5 Pro and a completely new generation. A leaker has at least mentioned price and release for a PS5 Pro.
Now an official job offer from Sony has further strengthened these rumors, as it also speaks of future generations. Sony is already working on an optimization of the current PS5 model.
Sony is looking for developers for “future PlayStation platforms”
What is this job listing about? The job listing is for a doctoral internship in the internal “Research and Development” department (via board.greenhouse.io). Sony itself describes the department’s tasks as “We research and develop innovative technologies that push the boundaries of gaming, and help game developers create the best games for PlayStation by providing a best-in-class SDK.”
The special feature lies in a detail of the job listing. It states that the candidate’s responsibilities include “contributing to the identification and development of the technology portfolio for future PlayStation platforms.”
Some now suspect that the formulation “future PlayStation platforms” could point to a PS6 or at least a more powerful PS5 Pro.
Many users are sure to be surprised or even upset by this announcement, but it is not uncommon for the industry to start developing new hardware very early.
In the past, Sony had also started working on a new console shortly after the release of a new generation of PlayStation.
Both PS4 and PS5 have been in development for years
Developing a new console would be nothing unusual for Sony. They followed a similar approach with earlier generations:
- The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, the development of the PS4 started in 2008.
- The PS4 was released in 2013, and the development of the PS5 likely started in 2015. However, there are no official statements on this.
An early development phase of a PS6 or at least a PS5 Pro would not be out of the question. Development and research usually take several years, but we should not expect to see a PS6 in the near future. A more powerful PS5 Pro is much more likely.
Some users on Twitter also explain that it is not unusual. Once a generation has been released, manufacturers begin working on new hardware, and it takes a few years before more information becomes available.
