Actually, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is completed with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. However, there is a fourth film that perhaps very few viewers are aware of. In this film, Christian Bale is replaced by a pencil and paper.
Which film is it? Very few viewers are likely to be familiar with the animated film Batman: Gotham Knight. The film is a Japanese-American production from 2008 and consists of several segments created by some famous Japanese animation studios like Madhouse (One Punch Man).
The same producers are credited in the credits as those involved in the film trilogy. Batman: Gotham Knight takes place between the first two parts and is thus the second part of the story. Batman faces iconic villains such as Killer Croc and Deadshot.
However, the animated film was not overseen by Christopher Nolan and is not an official part of the trilogy. The production team acknowledged that the plot stands alone, even though it integrates well into the trilogy (via Anime News Network).

Could there be a fourth part from Christopher Nolan? After the trilogy of The Dark Knight, there were other film adaptations of Batman. But no film was as popular as Christopher Nolan’s series. Fans have since wished for a continuation of the dark trilogy.
If it were up to lead actor Christian Bale, he would be willing to step back into the role of the bat superhero. However, he would only participate if Nolan personally asked him to return.
However, Nolan and Bale have decided to leave the trilogy as is. Bale has since appeared in films like American Hustle and Thor: Love and Thunder. Nolan has focused on other films that do not originate from the DC Universe. These include:
- Interstellar (2014)
- Dunkirk (2017)
- Tenet (2020)
- Oppenheimer (2023)

In an interview, Bale clarified that Nolan does not want to exploit the Batman trilogy further (via Filmstarts). It was his original vision to conclude the story with three parts. And Bale also respects this wish.
Originally, Christopher Nolan actually saw Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman. There were even screentests to see if the actor fit the role. But with Christian Bale, he found the perfect replacement: Christopher Nolan tested various actors for Batman – Another star was the favorite before Christian Bale
