The studio behind the Pokémon games has reopened an old gaming wound with the latest trailer for their new action RPG on PS5 with MeinMMO author Ody. The gameplay surprisingly looks quite similar to Sekiro: the hardest Soulslike he has played so far.
During the State of Play, a new trailer for Beast of Reincarnation, the upcoming game from Game Freak, was shown. The studio is actually known for the Pokémon games, but their latest project is very far from those.
Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic Japan. It is the year 4026, and the world is full of monsters and dangerous robots. We play as Emma, who fights for humanity’s survival with her wolf companion Koo.

When I first saw the trailer, I was immediately transported back into one of the hardest Soulslikes I have ever played: Sekiro. I got the game just over two years ago, and I still haven’t managed to get through it at all.
Sekiro in the post-apocalyptic Japan of the future
If I can claim that a Soulslike has broken me, it’s Sekiro. And in terms of gameplay, Beast of Reincarnation is quite similar to that. The trailer shows this in multiple places, not just in the battles.
- In battle against a gigantic plant creature, our character parries the monsters’ attacks at the perfect moment until an opportunity for a counterattack arises
- Our character can climb to places using plant vines, similar to how Sekiro can with its prosthetic arm
- Emma also seems to have a few tricks up her sleeve that remind of Sekiro’s shinobi arts – in this case, an automatic crossbow
However, these similarities do not necessarily mean that Beast of Reincarnation will be equally tough. At least Game Freak is not marketing it with a high level of difficulty, and the term “Soulslike” is nowhere to be found.
If you’ve always thought that the battles in Sekiro look really cool but are too difficult, then Beast of Reincarnation might be a good lite version of that. We’ll learn more when the release approaches. This will be on August 4, 2026, so still this year.

It makes sense once you’ve seen it, promise: Everyone notices the bizarre chicken biceps in a new open-world game for the PS5, while the gameplay is even more exciting
