In the Overwatch League, only one woman has played so far: Kim “Geguri” Se-yeong. She played as an off-tank for the Shanghai Dragons, one of the league’s first teams. Now, however, she is back as a “free agent,” as the head of her former team puts it.
Who is Geguri? The arguably best player in the world was already in Overwatch APEX at just 18 years old, the first professional player. The signature heroes of the Korean player are especially D.Va and Zarya.
Geguri is so good that other professionals have accused her of cheating. After these allegations were proven false, the players who accused her left the Overwatch esports scene.
Since 2018, Geguri has been playing in the Overwatch League and joined the then-worst team: the Shanghai Dragons from China. She was also the first female player in the Overwatch League and remains the only one to this day. Only in the amateur league, the Contenders, are more women represented.
In the league, Geguri made headlines when she dramatically showcased Twitch star Dafran. However, she did not have much success with the Shanghai Dragons. She played there for 32 months.
From the worst team to the best on the list
It started out poorly: In the league’s inaugural season in 2018, the Shanghai Dragons finished with 40 losses and no wins. Even the acquisition of Geguri and other Korean players did not help. Korea is considered a top nation in Overwatch esports.
Only in the following season did it start to improve slowly. In February 2019, the Dragons managed their first win against the Boston Uprising, who were considered quite strong until then. That even brought the team’s fans to tears, literally.
Nevertheless, they only managed to place 11th in the second season with 13 wins to 15 losses. So not even a spot in the top 10, where even some newcomers from the season have arrived.
This is the current state of the team: For the 2020 season, there were further changes. For example, they bought the probably best DPS player and first star of the league, Fleta, along with other players. With success: The Dragons are now in first place in the standings based on points.
The team secured a total of 27 wins and only lost twice. However, in the playoffs at the beginning of October, they finished only in third place after a loss to Seoul Dynasty.
Geguri, however, saw little of this season on stage. She only got to play one full match – which was a win – and another round with the team. Otherwise, she sat on the bench.
Geguri leaves – But probably not forever
Why did she have to leave? According to the tweet from the Shanghai Dragons, the contract with Geguri simply expired and was not renewed. Along with her, Diya, DDing, diem, and Luffy are leaving.
So she was not fired, at least officially. In a tweet, she thanks her for the time with the team. Other players apparently fared worse:
What does her future hold? Currently, it is the offseason in the Overwatch League, where teams acquire new players or players leave and switch teams. It is quite possible that Geguri will compete next season in another jersey.
However, there is currently no information from her regarding this. However, she seems to remain loyal to Overwatch. She streams under the name frog135 almost daily on Twitch, showcasing her gameplay of the hero shooter. Whether and which other team she will join is still uncertain, but it is unlikely that she will completely disappear from the scene.
