The gamescom has introduced the nominees for the Gamescom Award 2021. In 22 categories, games are honored each year for excelling in specific areas. For multiplayer fans, 6 of them are particularly interesting. We at MeinMMO summarize.
What are the Gamescom Awards? This award honors games for what they do particularly well. In categories such as “Best PC Game,” “Best Indie Game,” and “Best Multiplayer Game,” the games compete against each other. A panel of experts from gamescom evaluates them.
An exception to this is the categories “Best Streamer” and the Most Wanted Consumer Award. In these two awards, the community can vote starting now (via surveymonkey.de).
Which categories are particularly exciting? As fans of multiplayer titles, you should especially keep an eye on the “Best Multiplayer Game” and “Best Ongoing Game” categories. A total of 6 exciting titles are competing here. An ongoing game is referred to as a game that is still being developed and continually brings new content. This is also known as Games-as-a-service. Below, we present the most exciting titles for multiplayer fans, followed by a list of all nominated titles.
When will the winners be announced? The main winners will be announced during the Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25th at 8 PM. All other winners will receive their awards during the Gamescom Studios on Thursday and Friday.

11.5 Titles for Multiplayer Fans
Nominated in the “Best Multiplayer” category: The titles Halo Infinite, Riders Republic, and The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes are nominated for the best multiplayer mode. We would like to introduce the games to you in more detail:
- Halo Infinite is the next installment of the Halo series and clearly focuses on multiplayer. In various game modes, you can compete in small teams or large groups. Also, you can build new maps yourself or shoot each other in close quarters in the Arena Mode.
- Riders Republic does not focus on fights but on sports. With up to 50 players, you compete in various bike races, on skateboards and snowboards, as well as on skis and with paragliders in the air. It sounds like a really great MMO if you don’t want to fight.
- The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes is more of a co-op game than a large multiplayer title. As you are used to from the series, you will be scared. This horror game sends you as an American soldier to Iraq in 2003, where you will find scary things under the sand. The focus is not on action but on story and decisions.
Nominated in the “Best Ongoing Game” category: Games are good, good games are even better, and great games that never stop are perfect. In this category, games that keep going and always receive new content are awarded. Nominated are Apex Legends, Black Desert Online, and Endzone – A World Apart.
- Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games on the market. In a futuristic setting, you choose your hero and then jump out of the nearest plane in true battle royale fashion. You land, search for weapons and items, and your play area keeps getting smaller. Whoever is the last team standing wins the round.
- Black Desert Online is an action MMORPG. You choose one of 23 different classes, level up your character in an open world, and master the action combat system. Besides leveling, you can compete with other players or build your own trading empire.
- Endzone – A World Apart is the only game on this list that does not even have a multiplayer, making it the 0.5 on the list. It is a mix of survival game and city-building strategy, where you need to ensure that your post-apocalyptic settlement withstands all adversities and that your inhabitants survive the end of the world. The developers are considering a possible multiplayer, but it is not planned in the near future.
