The lifecycle of the Nintendo Switch is approaching its end. Nevertheless, blockbuster games are still being released on the hybrid console. One title that has occupied me for a long time this year was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, on October 20, 2023, another title, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, is coming to the shelf that has the potential to be a Switch hit.
What is Super Mario Bros. Wonder about?
- The game will again be a classic 2D side-scroller
- There are new Wonder Flowers that open up completely new dimensions
- For the first time, Mario and his friends can become elephants
- Princess Daisy is playable outside of a spin-off for the first time
The title allows us to sit with up to four players on one screen and hop from platform to platform together. There’s nothing particularly special about that at first glance, but the so-called Wonder Flowers spice up the game with new dimensions.

Thanks to the Wonder Flowers, it becomes possible to change the environment in unforeseen ways. Suddenly, the pipes become wiggly creatures, or Mario himself turns into a dangerous spiky ball.
The trailer also shows how Mario alternates between running normally and then in an extended form through the level. With other Wonder Flowers, it can happen that suddenly a horde of Triceratops runs across the screen.
The possibilities seem endless and bring a creative twist to the dusty 2D side-scroller genre. Therefore, I am already looking forward to the many dimensions into which the Wonder Flower will transport me.
Even without the Wonder Flower, the game has a lot to offer: There are fat hippos rolling around and Koopas zooming on inline skates.
I haven’t even mentioned my personal highlight yet: In the game, it’s for the first time possible to play as Daisy outside of a spin-off like Mario Tennis or Mario Kart. The lively princess appeals to me more than Princess Peach, which is why I am thrilled about her appearance.
It remains to be seen how chaotic the game will get when I grab three friends to play the title together. But already, Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks like a title for which I will gladly dust off my Nintendo Switch.
