Warner Bros. takes MultiVersus offline: One of many service games that have been shut down in recent weeks.
What kind of game is it? MultiVersus is a free-to-play fighting game inspired by Smash Bros. that features well-known characters from Warner Bros.’ media multiverse. Here, Batman fights Bugs Bunny, while Samurai Jack battles Jason in a fight of sword versus machete.
You can watch a gameplay trailer for the game here:
When was the game released? MultiVersus originally launched in July 2022 as an open beta. About a year later, the game was taken offline again: The reason was that developer Player First Games wanted to revise aspects like the netcode, matchmaking, and progression, as well as develop new characters, maps, and game modes.
In May 2024, the relaunch followed, but the game was unable to retain its players permanently. While there were over 150,000 players on Steam at launch, there were only 720 players left recently (via steamdb.info).
Warner pulls the plug after Season 5
When will the game be taken offline? MultiVersus will be shut down on May 30, 2025, as announced by the developers in a statement on multiversus.com. So after five seasons, it will be over. The last season introduces two new characters, DC’s Aquaman and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes, which you can unlock in the Battle Pass.
If you want to play MultiVersus in the future, you must download the game by May 30, 2025, at 6:00 PM CET. Online features will, of course, no longer be supported, but you will still be able to fight locally against friends or against AI.
All microtransactions made will remain with you. Since January 31, the premium currency Gleamium can no longer be purchased with real money, but you can still use it for in-game purchases. The same applies to character tokens that you have not used yet.
New service games had a tough time last year. After the flop of expensive productions like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Concord, and other games, publishers and developers are pulling back significantly – we received news a few weeks ago that Sony is canceling the development of 2 major service titles for the PS5, even though one had a really strong brand.
