A Fable in an MMO setting? That dream could have come true. However, that has now been disproven.
Update 07/25/2020: As windowscentral reports, there are now several sources from the developers’ circle that deny the rumor. While there may be some “online components,” such as co-op, the new Fable game is definitely intended to be a comprehensive action RPG that can be played in single-player. None of this suggests that it would be an “MMO.”
Original message: The Fable series is now considered among the “old guard” in the RPG sector. Many players likely still associate the first part with their childhood and recall the numerous cool opportunities that the game offered. After all, one could become a shining hero or a dark villain – or everything in between. However, the next installment in the series will probably not be “Fable 4” – but an MMO. At least that is what a French journalist claims.
Where did the info come from? The information comes from the French journalist CronoTK. He had already accurately known which games Microsoft would present at the Xbox Games Showcase and was aware of all the titles – including the new Warhammer game. This also included the trailer for the new Fable game. For Fable, he claims to know that it is an “MMO in the world of Fable,” along with the addition “Sorry, not Fable 4.”
In light of the fact that all his other information about the showcase has proven to be true, there could indeed be some truth to this.
However, please note that this information has not been confirmed yet.
What could a Fable MMO look like? That is still not entirely clear. However, due to the three predecessors in the Fable franchise, there is already a large game world where an MMO adventure could take place.
The Fable series has always had a major hallmark, which is the freedom of the player to solve problems in different ways and make choices. Thus, one’s hero could be shaped into a shining knight with a halo or gradually degenerate into a dark villain reveling in the suffering of others through evil deeds.
In an MMO implementation, thematically it might echo SWTOR and its decisions for the “light” and “dark” sides of the Force.
However, it is also quite possible that Fable allows for a much stronger shaping of a hero or villain. Then, several abilities and talents could even be linked to the character’s deeds.
Unfortunately, the brief trailer currently provides no clues as to what the game will look like. Only one thing is clear: the differences between “hero” and “villain” will likely continue to play a major role in the next Fable game.
