With the return of a popular monster in the second major Title Update for Monster Hunter Wilds, the solution to a puzzle that has occupied fans for 16 years is also on the horizon. Because there is one point that distinguishes Wilds from its predecessor Monster Hunter Tri, released in 2009.
Which puzzle will finally be solved? Fans have always been particularly concerned with the name of the monster. Not because it is unknown, but rather because it is not quite clear how to pronounce it. Until now, there has been no official voice-over for the name.
This seems to ignite discussions in the community, which have flared up again with its return (via Reddit). In the summer of 2025, the 2nd Title Update is set to finally see the return of the popular Leviathan and ruler of the seas Lagiacrus. And with it, the hope for a solution to this old puzzle.
“The guild empowers you to hunt this La (mumble, mumble, mumble) to protect this ecosystem!”
What does the community say about this possibility? User swagboyclassman opens their thread on Reddit with the words, “I just realized that with Title Update 2 we’ll finally get an official pronunciation of Lagiacrus! How do you pronounce it? I’m Team Lah-Jya-Crus and I would be heartbroken if I’m wrong.”
Below are numerous comments from users who ask the same question, and others who make a joke out of it:
- TheHopeflame jokes: “Just to annoy us: Every character that says it, says it differently.”
- themightypetewheeler writes: “The guild empowers you to hunt this La (mumble, mumble, mumble) to protect this ecosystem!”
- Hyero mocks: “I pronounce it Lagiacrus.” To which DeusIzanagi replies: “That’s a really strange way to pronounce it… I say Lagiacrus,” and Lenku concludes: “I never thought I would see two incorrect pronunciations for Lagiacrus.” Many other commentators jump on this bandwagon and extend the joke further.
- A German comment from Betonmischael states: “The good old Lagillencrust.”
Redemption after 16 years
Why is this puzzle only being solved now? So far, there has been little to no proper voice acting in parts of the Monster Hunter series. Especially the older games came without much voice output and only a few sounds – the majority of conversations had to be read.
So it was in Monster Hunter Tri (2009 / Nintendo Wii) or Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2013 / Nintendo 3DS). Since then, Lagiacrus has not appeared in a Monster Hunter, which is why the pronunciation of its name remained a mystery – until today.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the quests around the introductions of monsters are mainly voiced. The likelihood is therefore very high that we will finally receive an official pronunciation of the name “Lagiacrus” this time.
Because Alma authorizes every hunt of a new monster with her infamous phrase “The guild authorizes the hunt for xy (insert monster’s name here)…” Therefore, Lagiacrus will most likely be announced in this way and the hunt for it will begin.
User TheGMan-123 points out in the Reddit thread that an English pronunciation of the name was briefly heard in the video “Welcome to Monster Hunter,” in which actress Daisy Ridley introduces the story surrounding Monster Hunter. Therefore, it would be pronounced “lag-ee-ak-rus” in English. A child in Monster Hunter Tri had called it “leggy-ahh-crus,” which is also close.
How Lagiacrus will ultimately be pronounced officially in a Monster Hunter game in different languages will probably be revealed in the summer of 2025 when TU2 launches. Then Lagiacrus will finally be huntable again after 16 years. However, this also causes concerns for MeinMMO editor Alexander Schürlein: After 16 years the legendary Lagiacrus finally returns to Monster Hunter – Now I’m afraid that it won’t meet expectations.
