After failures like Death Note and Cowboy Bebop, anime fans finally have a reason to look forward to Netflix adaptations again. Netflix might build on the success of the live-action adaptation of One Piece. Already in December 2023, the next anime Yu Yu Hakusho is set to premiere.
What is Yu Yu Hakusho?
- The anime aired from 1992 to 1995, coinciding with Dragon Ball Z
- The series consists of 112 episodes
- The original manga is by Yoshihiro Togashi, the husband of Naoko Takeuchi (creator of Sailor Moon)
- Like One Piece, it belongs to the shonen genre, targeting a young male audience
Unfortunately, Netflix has not yet revealed exactly which day the live series will be available on the streaming service. The series is said to be in production since June 2021, and at least some early images from the set have been released at that time (via twitter.com).
In several teaser images, Netflix showcases the main characters of the series. The lead role is played by Takumi Kitamura (via IGN). He is known, among other things, from Tokyo Revengers. Jun Shison, Kanata Hongo, and Shuhei Uesugi take on the roles of Kurama, Hiei, and Kazuma Kuwabara, respectively (via Netflix).
It is already known from the director that there will be many action scenes in the series. The latest technology will be used for the visual effects.

Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of a ghost detective
What is Yu Yu Hakusho about? The anime is about 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi. He is a rebel and has no respect for others. He skips school and gets into fights in his free time.
But one day he saves a small child from being hit by a vehicle. During this act, however, Yusuke dies. The spirit world is surprised by his heroic deed, as Yusuke finds no place in either heaven or hell.
Therefore, Yusuke gets the chance for a second life. After his rebirth, he must fulfill the tasks of a ghost hunter. He has to defeat demons for the prince of the spirit world, Lord Koenma. During his journeys, he meets more and more characters who join his quest.
The production is handled by Robot Inc. Kazutaka Sakamoto, whom we already know from Alice in Borderland, is the executive producer. The director is Sho Tsukikawa, known for his work on I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.
It remains to be seen whether the anime adaptation will be as successful as One Piece. A second season for the Netflix series was recently confirmed.
