Fortnite: Battle Royale has not only received a new zone with Tilted Town, but also a new gameplay mechanic: build restrictions. This is optimal for noobs, like our author Jürgen. But what about the rest?
What is the new zone? With the update to patch 10.0 today on August 6, 2019, the already leaked new zone Tilted Town entered the game. The future city Tilted Towers, built in season 9 with its skyscrapers and wind tunnels, has now given way to a western town that resembles the old Tilted Towers in layout.
In Tilted Town, you will find special western weapons, such as the hunting rifle, the revolver, and the double-barrel shotgun. As soon as you enter the area, your character will be dressed in a western outfit.
Tilted Town abolishes building!
What’s there in Tilted Town? The major feature in Tilted Town is that the zone radically separates itself from Fortnite gameplay. Because for a long time, the big unique selling point of Fortnite has been building. And that is not possible here. The entire Tilted Town cannot be built upon. You can only walk around and shoot. Even breaking down and destroying surroundings is no longer possible.
What are players doing in Tilted Town? Instead of hiding behind walls at the first sign of gunfire, it gets lively in Tilted Town, and players are shooting and jumping like crazy. As a result, players in Tilted Town quickly diminish each other, as many people are jumping off there right now, and soon after, a wild search for loot begins and chaotic shooting ensues.
What you see here is exactly what Fortnite would be without building: a fun, colorful shooter with somewhat eccentric bloom on its weapons. And I love it!
This is how Fortnite is fun for me again!
That’s why Fortnite without building is also cool: I love the look and dynamics of Fortnite, but I have never warmed up to building. I prefer shooting to building myself. I even see it a bit like Doc, who claims Fortnite teaches today’s shooter kids to be cowards.
I wouldn’t go that far, but the idea of building a house in response to gunfire in a shooter has never been a lot of fun for me. I much prefer grabbing a gun right after landing and mowing down opponents before they can gather materials to build.
Later in the game, I often fell victim to bunker pros who shot at me from fortifications erected in seconds, unless I managed to take them out right away.
In Tilted Town, however, there’s always this cool early-game dynamic, and you can hunt down the enemy in the best old-school shooter style with a gun in hand, and they have no walls or fortifications to hide behind.
If it were up to me, Epic would gladly expand the build-free zones further and introduce them in other places as well. This makes the game more exciting for everyone in my opinion:
- For noobs, because they can have successes even without building.
- For veterans and pros, because you have to change your strategy and can’t always rely on things working out like before.
This is how the new zones could continue: Of course, the situation with Tilted Town and the building ban is a risk for Epic. Because anyone landing there has a clear disadvantage in the mid and late game, especially since you can’t break anything in Tilted. Resources will inevitably be missing later.
Therefore, it is quite possible that Epic will let Tilted Town disappear as quickly as it appeared and will continue to introduce new zones with special rules like build bans throughout the season. They will likely remain as long as they are new and exciting, and then disappear again.
But I’m fine with that, I enjoy the new Tilted and delight in the tears of people who desperately try to build a wall when someone approaches with a shotgun.
