Since September 1, 2024, the US series “Peacemaker” is running in Germany on Amazon Prime. MeinMMO series expert Schuhmann says: The series is much better than it should be. Anyone who is missing “The Boys” should indulge in Peacemaker. Just for John Cena, it must be seen. The series is really fun.
This is how Peacemaker begins: The heavily injured Peacemaker from “Suicide Squad” considers himself a superhero. The rest of the world sees him as a trigger-happy killer with questionable views on morality and decency.
Peacemaker is discharged from the hospital, breaks into his trailer, and picks up his best friend from his racist supervillain father: a bald eagle named Eagley. He also stocks up on new equipment. Daddy made him new superhero helmets.
Actually, Peacemaker should still be serving 25 years for murder and can’t believe he is free. But it quickly becomes clear to him: He remains free only if he joins a special unit and carries out secret operations on behalf of the US government.
This special unit, however, is not exactly first-class, as it consists of agents who have fallen from grace and his trigger-happy superfan Vigilante. He just can’t get rid of the sociopath. Anyway, after so long in prison and the hospital, Peacemaker first wants to take care of the most important things: drink beer and sleep with a woman. But that’s where the trouble begins.
The intro to the series of Peacemaker is really eye-catching:
A biting and colorful mix that is really fun
That’s the tone of Peacemaker: The tone of Peacemaker is exuberant, colorful, and full of joy in play. You can tell that wrestler John Cena enjoys his role every minute.
Cena plays a character who is willing to kill as many people as necessary as long as it’s for “peace.” A crude philosophy that Peacemaker picked up as a child and has never questioned since.
However, the series is neither harmless nor totally silly, but keeps offering biting allusions. Peacemaker is looked at askance for his reactionary macho views when he discusses that a woman has breasts that are too large to call them “sugar tits,” but “pudgy cheeks” is absolutely okay.
The plot of the series is exciting, the action scenes are great, and the pounding soundtrack, which mostly consists of 80s glam rock, is a lot of fun.
This is the highlight: Visually, Peacemaker is impressive, with great ideas like the eagle and the imaginative antagonists you quickly get to know. The series has some clever ideas for its action sequences and the dynamics among the characters. Especially the relationship of Peacemaker to the individual characters and how they change over the 8 episodes of the series has more depth than one might think at first glance. Particularly problematic characters like his “white supremacist” father or the psycho sidekick Vigilante are interesting partners.
The many allusions and wordplay in the dialogues are particularly enjoyable. In addition, Peacemaker is excellently cast.
Besides John Cena, Danielle Brooks, known from “Orange is the New Black,” and “Terminator” Robert Patrick shine. But also the “super characters” like Vigilante or Judo Master are a lot of fun. Just the various insults that the short-statured martial arts specialist Judo Master has to endure are creative.
Do you need to be familiar with the DC universe for Peacemaker? No, that is not necessary. Although Peacemaker takes place in the universe of Superman and Batman and there are some allusions to the heroes – especially the poor Aquaman suffers. But no prior knowledge is required to enjoy Peacemaker.
Peacemaker is as quirky as “Guardians of The Galaxy” from the same creator
Who is the series ideal for? Those who like “The Boys” will feel right at home in Peacemaker. Although Peacemaker is not as dark in tone and not quite as bloody, it addresses some themes from “The Boys” and also shows superheroes who have their struggles with the moral code.
The general tone of the series is reminiscent of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Peacemaker in some situations resembles the meaner, more muscular version of Starlord. No wonder, James Gunn, the writer and director of all three “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and also of “The Suicide Squad,” is behind Peacemaker.
Peacemaker has been airing on Amazon Prime since September 1. The first season has 8 episodes. A second season is planned for 2025.
