The current star in League of Legends is 22-year-old midlaner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon. He has achieved a performance at the LoL Worlds 2023 that no one before him managed, not even the legendary Faker. Chovy has qualified for the Worlds playoffs 5 times in a row. And he is only 22 years old.
Why is the record special? Before Chovy, no one managed to reach the Worlds playoffs 5 times in a row in LoL. This requires a high level of skill in the team and extreme consistency: one must prevail in their own region 5 times, go to the Worlds, and then be strong enough to get through the group stage:
- This consistency was not even achieved by Faker – whose team T1 repeatedly failed to qualify for the Worlds in weaker years when younger teams surpassed T1. Thus, T1 completely missed the Worlds in 2018 and 2020 – among other reasons, because Chovy managed to qualify with his teams unexpectedly.
- The closest to setting the record was the US-ADC Sneaky: He reached the playoffs in 2013 and 2014 and then from 2016 to 2019 – but he could not do it in 2015 and 2020 his career was already over.
Played with 4 different teams, but each time successfully
What sets Chovy apart: Chovy’s record is also special because he achieved qualification with different teams: The first 3 times he made it with actual “underdog” teams, where he had to bear the main load: Griffin, DragonX, and Hanwha Life were rather outsiders from 2018 to 2020, but filled with great talents.
Qualification with his current team, Gen G., is not such a big surprise. They are considered one of the favorites to win the title.
This makes Chovy the new star in LoL: Chovy plays midlane, which is usually the most prestigious position in LoL, as aggressive champions are played here who can gather many kills.
In recent years, Chovy has built a remarkable reputation as “Our Lord and Savior Chovy” through his sheer skill and is once again in stunning form in 2023. At the Worlds, he achieved a KDA of 14.3 in just 3 games and was involved in 73% of his team’s kills.
Before the Worlds, he just set a record in South Korea and won gold at the Asian Games.
