The new sandbox MMORPG Profane wants to offer players maximum freedom. A current trailer shows what to expect in the game. In particular, the dynamic world reminds one of the ambitious but cancelled title Everquest Next.
The Brazilian indie developer team Insane has set out to achieve something great with the sandbox MMORPG Profane for PC. They aim to revive the players’ sense of wonder and freedom that has been lost over the years in the MMORPG genre.
This is the ambitious sandbox MMORPG Profane
This is the MMORPG: The sandbox MMORPG Profane is currently in pre-alpha. It aims to offer players many possibilities with its large open world. There are neither classes nor a linear story to follow.
You write your own adventure, can become anything, even a pirate king, while shaping the dynamic world.
This is the story: Although there is no proper story to follow, Profane does have a background story:
In the world, everything is connected by five elements: light, shadow, nature, spirit, and fury. After a long war period during which magic was nearly eradicated by an inquisition, players enter as a race of beings created from the world itself. Now it is time to discover the ruins of ancient empires, regain the magic of the five elements, and defeat a mysterious figure that apparently wants to destroy everything.
These will be the core features: The features in Profane are typical of sandbox nature. You can design your character as you wish. In the world, you gather resources, complete quests, discover secrets, and build a village or an entire city.
Dynamic open world
This is the sandbox world: Profane will offer a constantly changing sandbox world full of secrets to discover. The world reacts to the players’ actions. For example, the developer mentions that a gnoll village does not always remain the same:
- It can grow, the population can increase, and the gnolls may attack players
- or the gnoll population will be wiped out and the gnolls will disappear.
This is why Profane reminds of Everquest Next: A similar idea to the gnoll village was previously laid out by the cancelled MMORPG Everquest Next.
It aimed to introduce events with its dynamic world that would completely change the map. For example, monsters could eventually overrun an NPC city if players ignored the kill quests for too long.
This is how Profane will manage servers: The regions of Profane will be hosted on servers around the world and form a single global map. How large this map will be is not yet known.
Multiple continents or islands can be traversed via sea routes with ships.
However, caution is advised, as hostile players can confront you at any time due to open PvP. If you die in the game, you will also lose your loot.
No classes or levels
This is how your character is created: Players cannot choose classes or level up. Everything depends completely on their own skills.
The combat system is action-based, and players can collect skills and create builds. While multiple skills can be discovered, only a limited number can be equipped at the same time.
This is how skills become stronger: Skills improve dynamically when used more frequently and not by allocating skill points. Using individual weapons is also trained over time, just like in WoW Classic.
Players can be anything they want to be. A recluse, a necromancer, or even a pirate king. The choice is yours.
The housing system in Profane
This is how housing works: The sandbox MMORPG features a housing system. You must gather the necessary resources yourself and can build anything from small huts to villages to entire cities.
This is how Profane will deal with territories: You can also claim your own land in the sandbox MMORPG, set laws, and impose taxes. You will attempt to keep hostile players at bay by any means necessary. Whether there will be major territorial wars, like those in New World, is not yet known.
Pre-alpha and Free2Play
This is the current status: Currently, Profane is in a pre-alpha phase. However, the pre-alpha is currently only accessible in Brazil for supporters, i.e., purchasers of a founder’s packet. The developers were already at gamescom 2019 with the MMORPG and want to soon make the pre-alpha and founder’s packets available worldwide. Currently, the prices and contents of the packages cannot be viewed.
With the start of the beta phase, which has no date yet, the PC game is planned to become Free2Play. Here, Profane will then offer an in-game shop where you can purchase cosmetic items or new mounts.
When the title will launch in our region or whether a console version is planned is still undecided. However, if you are looking for interesting games, you should check out our list of the 15 best MMORPGs and MMOs.
