The indie studio Novarama has introduced Killsquad in a new trailer. The new hack and slash takes some ideas from other games and combines them into something of its own. The release is soon.
What is Killsquad? Killsquad is a hack and slash with a special twist. The galaxy has lost its order; mega-corporations now represent the law and hire bounty hunters to rob other corporations, various riches, and other bounty hunters.
You play a “killsquad” of such bounty hunters, which is repeatedly hired for new assignments. Killsquad combines some RPG elements with the hack and slash genre.
The catch: You start at level 1 in each mission and level up during the assignment. You can continuously assign talents that improve your skills and even learn one of two ultimate abilities.
These features Killsquad has
What makes Killsquad special? The aforementioned talent and skill system is one of Killsquad’s unique selling points. Each character has their own abilities that can be improved but not changed (except for the ultimates). There is therefore no continuous character development.
Which abilities you have depends on which character you play. There are initially four characters with their own roles and skills:
- The Robo-Doc Zero with healing packs and electro weapons (healer/support)
- The hammer-swinging space zombie Kosmo (tank)
- The agile swordswoman and glass cannon Cass (melee DPS)
- The gun-happy gunslinger Troy (range DPS)
Otherwise, the first images appear like a classic hack and slash, which, however, seems a little more focused on teamwork and quick rounds than its genre counterparts. Further main features are not yet known.
Where Killsquad draws from: In the videos, many of the enemies, characters, the environment, and also the weapons and the inventory remind of Destiny 2. Killsquad seems to have borrowed ideas from other sources as well, such as:
- The classic gameplay of Diablo
- The dystopian corporate rule of Shadowrun
- The talent system from Heroes of the Storm
- The killer Jason from Friday the 13th.

Also, the shooter hit Overwatch apparently served as a template for at least one character. Troy has two guns – revolvers that he knows how to use similarly to McCree. Even one of his abilities and his look with the poncho are similar. One of his ultimate abilities is even almost identical to Reaper’s Death Blossom.
