MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen was able to take a closer look at the new set “Crimson & Purple – Travel Companions” thanks to a Top Trainer Box and two Build-&-Battle Boxes, and she was especially excited about certain cards.
I particularly love Pokémon cards when they expand the story and don’t just depict Pokémon bluntly. That’s why I can spend hours looking at the Full-Art cards, which show Pokémon in specific everyday situations or in their natural habitat.
The new expansion “Travel Companions” features the special aspect that 4 trainers appear, whom you know from the Pokémon games and the anime. Since I’ve played the Pokémon games less frequently since Pokémon Sun & Moon, I’m especially excited about N and his Zoroark, both of whom are part of Pokémon Black & White.
And the special thing is: Many of the cards show the 4 trainers interacting with their Pokémon. It’s really cute to see how the Pokémon get a pet or play with their trainers. I’ll reveal which cards you should pay special attention to if you think like me.

Pokémon cards with glitter effects and cute moments
This is what the new set offers: In the upcoming expansion, 4 different trainers and their Pokémon are at the forefront. The following characters are especially featured:
- N, whose full name is actually Natural Harmonia Gropius, is an important character from Pokémon Black & White. He is associated with Team Plasma and has Zoroark as his partner Pokémon.
- Lilly is the young assistant of Professor Kukui in Sun & Moon and a classmate of Ash in the anime. She is known for her relationship with Cosmog but is seen with Piepi in the card expansion.
- Hop is the rival from Sword & Shield and the younger brother of the Champion of the Galar region. He has, among others, Zwollock on his team.
- Enigmara has joined with the newest game expansion Crimson & Purple. The streamer is also the head of the Electric Gym and has a Wampitz.
The new expansion contains more than 180 new cards with different rarity levels. Especially the rare cards have incredible effects that I, as a player of Magic: The Gathering, was not familiar with.
The ex-Pokémon, for example, have strong holo effects. Depending on the light, I could see stars and stripes that show in a different color depending on the angle. Even rarer cards have glitter or gold effects. My favorite cards had metallic-colored, colorful borders. Such effects are usually treated rather poorly in other trading card games.
One of my favorite cards from the new expansion is the promo card that you get in the Top Trainer Box. As mentioned at the beginning, I associate Pokémon Black & White the most, which is why I’ve particularly focused on the cards featuring N.
The promo card depicts N petting Zorua, the first stage of Zoroark, on the cheek. The moment must have been captured at the beginning of their journey when Zorua had not yet evolved. When you recall the story of Black and White, in which N switches sides multiple times, it is an emotional sight.
Other cards, where Lilly interacts with Bandelby, for example, are super cute. And the card of Hop and his Wolly, as they gaze into the distance in the grassy landscape, has a calming effect on me.
However, what I miss in this edition are cards that tell a story over multiple copies. A good example is the Trasla, which evolves into Guardevoir over time and witnesses how its trainer grows older and starts a family. Unfortunately, there are no such cards in “Travel Companions”.
To protect your cards from thieves, you should take good care of your collection. A 9-year-old child even modified his cards so that no one would steal them.
