The Game Awards 2022 have taken place and the winners have been announced. However, in addition to the awards, there were also a ton of new game presentations, including the coop game Wayfinder for PS5 and PC (Steam). MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus watched the trailer and is quite confused – but also very intrigued.
Okay. What? Unlike my colleague Alex, who accompanied the live ticker for the Game Awards 2022 with all live announcements during the night, I drew the short straw and had to come in the morning to catch up on everything.
Accordingly, I first watched the most promising trailers for new games. Most of them look really good, especially Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, Suicide Squad, and of course Diablo 4, which finally has a release date.
And Wayfinder. The teaser image for the trailer already piqued my curiosity, but the video itself just left me confused:
- First, a strange tower that looks like something out of Fortnite. Okay, manageable.
- Then a portal that somehow looks like the crazy ideas from Nightingale. What does the game want to be?
- Gears and magical daggers – something with steampunk? Cool, I’m into that!
- Then a bridge in a cave. Now is it really Return to Moria?
- Finally, the playable characters with their skills. Sword-slashing, quick daggers, and fireballs against monster hordes. Nice! Such coop slashers are just the thing. Plus, a boss to round it all off. This is going to be good.
- Now one of the guys is standing in front of a sci-fi touchscreen selecting abilities. Weren’t we just in fantasy?
- The same guy then pulls out a shotgun and blasts the enemies … what the hell?
- More bosses, gunfire, and a guy with a scythe – then the rogue from the beginning suddenly uses some crazy Naruto techniques. Where are you going, Wayfinder?
- Afterward, a lady appears who resembles a monk from Diablo 3, goes into a berserker rage, and beats enemies with her bare fists. So, Nordic berserker monks are also in the game?
- Finally, a medieval fantasy city with neon signs like in New York, strange glitches that resemble the Matrix, and tons of loot …
Seriously … what did I just see? Check it out for yourself and let yourself be confused:
Wayfinders: Coop action with hero slasher?
The trailer intrigues me and I want to learn more. The official website doesn’t really help. If anything, I’m even more confused. There’s very little about the story there.
“Become a Wayfinder and discover their power while finding your path and playstyle, while simultaneously pushing back a hostile force that has conquered your world.” Good, that could just as well be said about Diablo if you replace Wayfinder with Nephalem.
What looks really interesting are the classes. So far, there are 5 characters visible, all of whom seem to have 3 abilities and some kind of ultimate. This is somewhat reminiscent of League of Legends and isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And at least I now know that the berserker monk lady is a brawler.
Additionally, the gameplay is supposed to consist of dungeon crawling, hunting, and coop battles as well as crafting, upgrades, and even housing! That does sound promising. I still don’t know how exactly that fits into the world. But at least it’s mentioned that there will be seasons. Cool … I guess?
Furthermore, the FAQ states that every character will be fully voiced and a beta will start on December 13, to which you can sign up via a form. I’m signing up right away because I want to know what Wayfinder really is and if it plays as cool as it sounds so far.
The release is scheduled for spring 2023 for PlayStation and PC, still without a specific date. However, the game will be a free-to-play title. I’m curious to see what becomes of it.
By the way, my highlight of the Game Awards was – unsurprisingly – Diablo 4. I’ve been looking forward to this game for years and the first tests are really promising:
