The action MMO Warlander mixes MOBA with hack & slash elements and will be released on January 24, 2023, on Steam. But before that, the developers are giving the free-to-play title a closed beta. MeinMMO tells you how you can participate.
When does the closed beta start? The closed beta for Warlander started today and is supposed to be playable until the release date on January 24. Until then, there will be a so-called happy hour every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday starting at 8:00 PM CET. During this time, you can play together with the developers!
However, please note that your progress in the closed beta is not permanent. With the official release, your progress will be reset so that all players can start at the same level. The developers are also working on a version of Warlander for the PS5 and Xbox.
How can you participate in the closed beta? If you think of a complicated invitation process when you hear the words “closed beta”, we can reassure you. Because basically, anyone can participate in the test.
All you need to do is visit the official Discord of Warlander and become a member. Then send a direct message there to PLAION LIVE OPS#2022 and ask for a Steam key for the closed beta. If you receive a key, you must activate it in Steam. To do this, open the Steam client, click on “Games” and then on “Activate a product on Steam”.
In an earlier version of this post, it was stated that you could ask the Discord admins for access to the closed beta. We have corrected this error. Please refrain from sending access requests to the admins of the Warlander Discord and follow the steps we have outlined for you above.

PvP battles from MMORPGs in MOBA format
What kind of game is Warlander? Warlander is an action MMO in third-person perspective with a unique setting that combines classic medieval and fantasy elements with robots and powerful siege weapons.
In Warlander, you can enter battles as a warrior, cleric, or mage. These classes work as you would expect from classic MMORPGs:
- Warrior – Specializes in melee combat, can tank or deal significant damage
- Cleric – Specializes in support, can heal allied units or assist with buff spells
- Wizard – Specializes in ranged combat, can cast powerful spells
For each of these classes, you can unlock abilities that allow you to fully customize the classes to your play style. The battles themselves resemble PvP skirmishes from MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online, or Warhammer Age of Reckoning.
How does the gameplay work? Warlander offers you two different game modes:
- In conquest mode, you join one of two armies and then try to capture a fortress. A total of 80 players must use siege weapons, among other things, to bring down the fortress walls.
- In the 5-army mode, a total of 100 players face each other in epic battles. The gameplay is more like a battle royal, as the army that remains at the end wins.
The game principle promises multi-layered action, as you cannot neglect the strategic aspect. You must make tactical decisions and find the right time for your offensive. However, you can also win through defensive strategies and diplomacy; the decision is entirely up to you.
