The MMO New World started its preview event yesterday, which players can speak freely about. We have captured the first opinions that the community has about New World.
That’s why players were not allowed to say anything: The Amazon MMO New World can currently be tested by many pre-order customers and players who registered for the beta. However, this is not the first time.
There have been several alpha tests that were under strict NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and about which players were not allowed to talk.
But that is now over for the time being. The preview event, which lasts until September 5, can be played and discussed in detail. And that’s exactly what the players are doing. Here is what they have to say.
Have the alpha rumors been confirmed?
This is what the players say: Despite the NDA, there have been occasional statements from players who allegedly tested New World in the alpha. These voices claimed that the MMORPG suffers from several problems. The testers of the preview version now seem to confirm this.
In the New World subreddit, a player published a list of aspects of the game that he believes are negative. The thread has received 217 upvotes, which may sound low, but is one of the highest upvote counts in the subreddit. And it is receiving a lot of support.
Above all, the quest system worries players. It consists only of “Kill” and “Collect” quests that offer no variety and where you always fight the same enemies:
- The user Lpunit writes: “[Quests] are a big issue for me. I was bored within 2 hours. It feels like there is nothing to discover, just going from A to B and back to A. Fighting a few zombies in between…”
- The user Schreckens wishes the quests had a story and therefore a purpose: “It feels like the quests “kill X, loot X boxes” are just fillers. I hope they don’t stay that way by the release. But I agree that quests need a deeper story or at least a bit of variation.”
- On Steam, the user MONZUN wrote about quests: “[…] The game has potential and could become a very high-quality game, but to achieve that, they need to change almost everything in it. […] It has the worst quests because they are ONLY Fetch and Kill quests. Nothing else. If I had the fetch and kill quests alongside story quests and other things, then it would be great.”

The thread also lists several more issues:
- Character animations don’t look good.
- Player hitboxes: You cannot jump over small objects like tables or chairs. However, you can trap other players in houses by standing in front of the door.
- Lack of variety among enemies: You fight the same enemies repeatedly.
- PvP system: There is no reason to do PvP, the rewards are too low. Players can also resurrect their opponents from other factions and immediately kill them again.
- There is no jumping in New World, which is a no-go for some users.
Praise for graphics, sound, and special features
Alongside the strong criticism, there are also positive voices about New World. However, these are currently in the minority. The user Barqsie is pleased that New World directly supports ultra-wide in the beta.
The graphics and sound are also often praised. The user -ixi writes:
The mining, the level-ups, the sounds of chopping down trees, pretty much all weapon skills and attacks sound really good, and the explosion effects from some skills give me a real sense of danger and action. I love it!
In general, the gathering and crafting system receives praise. The user DracoRubi writes: “So far, the only things that I really enjoy about the game are the gathering and crafting.”
On Steam, the user Trashjunkie wonders about the negativity in the comments:
What happened here? The game is great. The world looks incredible and there is a lot to do. I can’t wait to see what the future brings.
In the same thread, the user Soak also draws a comparison to ESO and FFXIV. Both games launched in a poor state and only got better over time, with Final Fantasy improving only after the game had been offline for some time. New World, on the other hand, has not been released yet and is currently only playable in a preview.
Opinions on the combat system are divided
What do users say about the combat system? In terms of the combat system, there are players who criticize it harshly and others who have much praise for New World.
The user Resouledxx has some issues and his list has received many upvotes on Reddit:
- Every attack and skill locks the character in an animation. This gives the feeling that you have no control over it.
- The aftercast (the time after the attack but before the next action) is too long for him.
- The weapon switch feels too slow.
- The skills are too similar and monotonous. It feels more like being in a combat simulation than in an MMO.
- He dislikes that the weapons share cooldowns. For example, if you use your “Q” ability with the sword, it is also on cooldown on the new weapon.

However, some users oppose him, finding the slow combat system to be good, especially for tactical PvP fights. The user Crankplate responds:
I agree with the aftercast […]. But I disagree with the rest. I like the slow, more strategic combat style of Dark Souls and New World tries to imitate it.
Being stuck in an animation is just like in Dark Souls. Don’t spam, but use your movement wisely […]. The slow weapon switch is fine with me. One shouldn’t pull a gigantic hammer out of a hat and then constantly make huge hits without a visible interruption. That’s what many games do […].
The skills are not monotonous, just not as flashy as in other MMORPGs. And I like the toned-down, long cooldowns on abilities. They are not meant to be spammed but used wisely at the right moment…
What about performance? Opinions are also divided on performance. The user ilikecookieslawl explains that even the well-known streamer shroud had to lower graphic settings with an I9 processor and an RTX 2080 TI to get a good FPS count.
In contrast, there are several statements from players who have no issues in New World. However, I personally experienced slight performance issues while playing and had bigger problems when I tested a battle 50v50 together with the developers.
And how about you? Did you get to test it? What do you think of the preview version of New World? Vote and tell us in the comments!
