The responsible parties at Atlus have released a new trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio featuring the release date as well as a 25-minute gameplay showcase. The new role-playing game from the creators of Persona 5 looks so fantastic that our MMORPG expert is straying from his favorite genre.
What do I need to know about Metaphor: ReFantazio? The new role-playing game from Atlus will be released on October 11, 2024, for PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation. The development team includes three veterans of the popular Persona franchise: Director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro.
In terms of gameplay and audiovisuals, Metaphor: ReFantazio strongly resembles its quasi-predecessor Persona 5, which was released in April 2017. You can expect turn-based combat as well as intricate party and relationship systems. However, instead of throwing you into school, the new RPG places you in a high-fantasy world.
A first impression is offered by the new trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio:
“Could be my game of the year”
Why should I keep an eye on this game? I am actually the MMORPG expert at MeinMMO. However, instead of diving into online worlds, I will surely spend around a hundred hours on the new single-player experience from Atlus starting in October – that’s how long it took me to complete Persona 5. I also found the two predecessors great.
Accordingly, my anticipation for the new project from the creators of Persona is enormous. A anticipation that is continually fueled by every trailer and developer update. Similar to Persona, the interface, menus, and graphics appear to be seamless in Metaphor as well.
The 25-minute showcase shows many areas of Metaphor: ReFantazio:
The creature design is wonderfully bizarre. The orchestral music pieces beautifully underscore the battles and story sequences presented. And of course, the theme of time management plays a significant role again. Traveling to distant places causes time to pass, which you need to plan, as some events only occur at very specific times.
So, can I expect Persona 5 in a fantasy setting? At first glance, it seems so, but the developers provide many gameplay innovations in detail. Through your relationships with companions, for example, you can be inspired and unlock new archetypes such as the knight. In combat, you have the power to transform into these powerful warriors.
The developers are also no longer relegating battles to rather generically designed towers or palaces. While there are still many dungeons in the world of Metaphor, you also traverse the openly designed outer regions populated by monsters.
To prevent turn-based battles with easier enemies from constantly slowing you down, you can optionally switch to a fast real-time system. Alternatively, you can simply evade the creatures. There are no random battles from other role-playing games from Japan here.
What is your first impression of Metaphor: ReFantazio? Are you excited for the role-playing game? Let me know in the comments! Until October 11, 2024, we can still pass the time with another single-player RPG:
