The Wretch is the 10th class of Elden Ring. It is notable that this class starts the game without any clothing or armor. What is the purpose of the Wretch then? MyMMO introduces it to you.
This is the Wretch: Souls veterans are familiar with the Wretch class from games like Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, or Bloodborne. Each of these games features this class, which starts without armor and is only armed with a club.
The official description states: “A poor, aimless swine, naked as the day of their birth. A fine club is all they have.
“
But why would anyone choose the “poor swine” when they are inferior to others in terms of equipment? According to the community, it is worth taking a second look.
For the Wretch may be poor and aimless, but they have some qualities that set them apart from the other classes in Elden Ring and make them interesting for veterans.
The Wretch is perhaps the most flexible class in Elden Ring
The class choice in Elden Ring is a bit different than one might expect from other RPGs. While many classes there have a decisive influence for the rest of the game and set your playstyle within a framework, the classes in Elden Ring are significantly more flexible.
For example, you can start as an Astrologer with a staff, but with additional progress, you can easily reskill into a Warrior or Hybrid. The classes only define equipment and starting attributes. Everything else is determined with each level, somewhat like in Path of Exile.
What makes the Wretch so interesting: The class starts with completely balanced initial attributes of 10 points in each attribute and level 1. In comparison, the Warrior starts with 16 Dexterity and level 8. However, two of the 9 main attributes are below 10.
The balanced skill set makes the Wretch seemingly a bit weaker and is limiting at the start since you only meet the minimum requirements for a few weapons.
But that is exactly why many players play the class, as the attributes are well-suited to try out different builds. The reddit user Zerim023 writes about the class:
The Wretch is always a good way to play a Soulsborne game for the first time because you can discover everything for yourself and look for items and weapons while building a build that you choose spontaneously. Since resetting attributes has already been confirmed, there’s no reason not to experiment with a skill build.
Also zyuke19 agrees: “Wretch gang here. This is literally the best class if you frequently want to reset [attributes] later in the game and try different classes.”
However, not all players agree with the assessment that the Wretch is a good beginner class. biblethumb argues:
This is not true because in these games you take additional damage if you don’t wear equipment in a slot. Wearing something with 2 defense is much better than wearing nothing at all. Also, it is difficult for beginners to start with the club, a weapon with short range, because you need a good distance.
When should you choose the Wretch then? In summary, it can be stated: As a beginner class, the Wretch is not necessarily recommended. Elden Ring will be a challenging game anyway, and without armor, you’ll just take more damage.
However, if you already have experience with FromSoftware games and are looking for a flexible foundation for various builds, the Wretch might be the right choice for you.
In a few days, you can finally try out which of the classes is suitable for you. Elden Ring will be released on Friday, February 25th for PC via Steam, on PS5 and PS4, as well as Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
Some streamers have already shown a playable version in advance, so be cautious of spoilers.
Then you can explore the vast Between Lands, embark on a quest for the fragments of the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord.
However, you will first have to face numerous dangers, solve puzzles, and encounter absurd, strange, and quirky figures in the form of allies or monsters.
The story of Elden Ring will occupy you for about 30 hours – But you should take your time.
