The movie about Minecraft is a huge success and is thus, after the Super Mario Bros. movie, the next financially successful video game adaptation. However, this currently also brings problems. A TikTok trend encourages viewers to bring a chicken to the cinema.
What kind of trend is this? The Minecraft movie was released on April 3rd in Germany and has been quite successful worldwide so far. According to IMDb, the film grossed over 340 million US dollars with an estimated budget of 150 million US dollars (as of April 11, 2025).
Besides big stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film mainly impresses fans due to references to the popular game.
However, this also led to a TikTok trend. During certain scenes of the film, audiences in some showings start to riot and throw popcorn or other objects into the air. You can see what that looks like here on TikTok.
In particular, the chicken jockey scene seems to be a key moment for fans to completely lose it. One viewer took this scene even more seriously and brought a chicken to a showing.
A real chicken in the cinema
What happened in the auditorium? A YouTube video shows a cinema auditorium where the notorious chicken jockey scene is currently playing. Suddenly, you can see many teenagers rioting, taking off their T-shirts, and shouting.
Two guys wearing a creeper mask are the focus of the video because they are carrying a chicken with them during the riot. Later in the video, you can see how they packed it into a bag. Police have already been called to cinemas for such actions, as Minecraft riots seem not to be uncommon.
The film’s director, Jared Hess, has also commented on the chicken jockey incidents. In an interview with ew.com, he did not see the problem with it:
It is kind of funny when you’re having too much fun and the police are called. […] It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and popcorn being thrown, which I find so amusing that the police are called for popcorn. Yes, it’s hilarious. I have seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people climb on their friends’ shoulders and stand up and cheer those moments. It’s like this crazy excitement. But I’m just glad that people are making memories with their friends and family.
This problem also seems to exist in Germany. In a Reddit post, you can see a sign from the cinema chain Cineplex. It warns that you will be thrown out if you throw snacks. Furthermore, the auditorium will be monitored throughout the showing.
This is not the first time a movie has caused such a trend. As reported by rp-online.de in July 2022, the film Minions – The Rise of Gru
sparked the Gentleminions trend. Teens dressed up in suits and ties for it.
While it was quiet in Germany, there were riots during showings in the USA and the UK as well. What do you think about the Minecraft movie? Do you want to see it? Let us know in the comments.
