The head of Baldur’s Gate 3 returned his Game Award – at least that’s what his mother believes, leading to amusing discussions.
A few days ago, the Game Awards took place, and as every year, various games were honored with awards. The previous year’s winner had the pleasure of announcing the winner of the current year. However, this apparently confused the mother of Swen Vincke, the head behind “Baldur’s Gate 3.” Because she asked her son: “Why did you give your award back?”
What happened? At the Game Awards 2024, Swen Vincke had the pleasure of announcing the “Game of the Year” as the presenter. He not only gave a speech that sparked much discussion, but also crowned the game Astrobot as the winner afterward. Vincke was allowed to do this because his game (and that of his team) “Baldur’s Gate 3” won in the previous year.
But apparently not all viewers – or at least one viewer – quite understood what Vincke had actually done. Because he revealed on X afterward that his mother asked him: “Why did you give up your award?”
Apparently, the mother believed that Vincke had returned his own award from the previous year and passed it on to the next award winner.
Was that really the case? No. The awards of the Game Awards are not “traveling trophies” that are passed on every year. Vincke’s mother probably just did not fully understand the context in which the Game Awards take place and the role her son played in it.
How the community reacts: In the subreddit of Baldur’s Gate 3, people are apparently enjoying this thoroughly. The most agreement is received from the comment by thatHecklerOverThere:
“In every country, no matter how old you are, no matter how esteemed you are in your work, there is a good chance you are blessed with a loving family that includes a mother who is extremely proud of you yet hardly understands what the hell her child is actually doing.”
Some join in the fun as well, with Begaria on X saying:
“Honestly, looking back, that was a stupid thing to do. You should ask Team Asobi if they can return [the award] to you.”
Even though Baldur’s Gate 3 won the Game Awards as Game of the Year last year, the journey of the massive RPG is not quite over yet. Because the developers have released numerous major patches, and a final patch is still due in early 2025: the big Update 8 brings many new features.
