In Destiny 2, there is new information about the Thorn in Season 6. It seems to have received a new perk.
When is the Thorn returning: During the reveal of Season 6 content , Bungie revealed that the Thorn quest will start on March 12. That is the Tuesday exactly one week after the start of the new season.
Who can get the Thorn? It seems that every player who owns Destiny 2 can obtain the exotic hand cannon for free. Bungie mentions the Thorn in the ViDoc for Season 6 when talking about the content that everyone will receive, even without a annual pass.
However, this infographic causes confusion, primarily listing the annual pass-exclusive content of the new season:
The Thorn quest is listed here on March 12 alongside the Loyalty quest, which can only be played by annual pass holders. And the last two events in the graphic explicitly state that these will be free for all Guardians. The Thorn does not specify this.
Nonetheless, we assume that the Thorn quest will be available for all players – just as Bungie hints in the ViDoc.
Does the Thorn have a new perk?
This is how the Thorn was in Destiny 1: The “Thorn” was one of the best exotic hand cannons in Year 1 of Destiny 1, especially in PvP. It fired bullets that poisoned enemies and dealt additional damage over time. Therefore, it was considered the nastiest weapon, as it could still kill Guardians who were trying to retreat to regenerate.
How will the Thorn be in Destiny 2? Bungie has now released short gameplay footage of the Thorn in Destiny 2, where three enemies are killed with the weapon. With each (precision) kill, the enemies obviously drop a green sphere – this “trick” the Thorn could not do before:
YouTuber Datto shows you the gameplay footage in slow motion (from 6:59). He suspects that the spheres are related to a new perk of the Thorn. In other words, the Thorn may play a bit differently in Destiny 2 than it did in Destiny 1. However, what these spheres do can only be speculated.
Speculations about the spheres: Many Guardians are already discussing the “new Thorn” on Reddit:
- One user suggests that the Thorn could heal the user when picking up a green sphere. In the video, the Guardian picks up the sphere after the first kill, creating a screen effect reminiscent of healing effects.
- In the video, it can be seen that the Thorn initially looks “normal”. However, after the Guardian picks up the first green sphere, the Thorn begins to glow in front. He speculates that the sphere could activate or possibly enhance the poison.
- As seen in the image above, the Knight briefly glows green after being hit. Many see this as confirmation that he was poisoned and that the Thorn will still deal damage over time.
- Another Guardian writes that these spheres may have nothing to do with the Thorn but rather with unknown gameplay mechanics. However, most assume that the green spheres are directly related to the Thorn.
