The most successful PS4 game was actually Cyberpunk 2077 in June 2021. However, it seems to have fallen out of grace. Sony did little advertising for the delayed release and seems to want to sweep the game under the rug. Yet, this sci-fi epic is now the most downloaded PS4 game in June 2021 in their own PS Store.
This is the situation:
- Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 but was removed from the PS Store by Sony due to major technical issues. After a 6-month delay, the game has now returned to the PS Store.
- Although the game still has technical issues on the PS4 version, it is now the “most downloaded PS4 game in June 2021 in Europe and the USA”. The game returned to the PS Store on June 21, having only a few days to conquer the charts.
- Sony has not heavily promoted the return of Cyberpunk 2077 either; even in the shop, the PS Store, the game is only found in very cheap spots.
“Better than at launch – far from perfect”
What’s happening with the return of Cyberpunk 2077? Sony has put Cyberpunk 2077 back in the shop, but the game still doesn’t run well on the standard PlayStation 4.
According to Forbes, the game is “better than back then, but far from perfect.” While some quest bugs have disappeared, Cyberpunk 2077 still does not run well on the PlayStation 4.
Sony mentions Cyberpunk 2077 as little as possible.

Is it embarrassing for Sony? Well, normally you would expect Sony to promote “the biggest game of 2020 is finally coming to PS4” more, but Sony has been very quiet about the return of Cyberpunk 2077 to the PS Store:
- There is no major reference to the game on the store page. The news articles completely omit the return.
- Even as a lead for the “most downloads article,” they prefer the successful PS5 game Ratchet & Clank instead of Cyberpunk 2077, which is only mentioned in passing.
- In the list of “most downloaded games,” Sony currently places the game at rank 13, still behind Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and FIFA 21.
- It is completely absent from “New Games”.
The announcement that Cyberpunk 2077 would return to the shop was not properly made by Sony; rather, journalists discovered hints, inquired at Sony, and then received confirmation that Cyberpunk 2077 was coming back.
Overall, it seems that Sony wants to keep as much distance as possible between Cyberpunk 2077 and itself.
They don’t seem to be proud of their biggest hit in June 2021.
What’s going on with the advertising? In recent days, there has been excitement over a leaked commercial for Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt Red is apparently planning a marketing campaign that boasts about the “largest update so far”.
This confused people because no major update has been released recently. They were hoping for a big new update. However, CD Projekt Red means with this campaign the update 1.2, which was released in March 2021 and fixed many bugs.
