Keanu Reeves was last seen in the movie John Wick: Chapter 4. However, the most successful film featuring the actor is neither John Wick nor The Matrix. In fact, an animated film has grossed the most money in which Keanu Reeves appeared.
What film is it? Keanu Reeves was one of the voice actors who worked in Toy Story 4 (alternatively: A Toy Story: Everything is going haywire). The film was released internationally in 2019. In the Pixar hit, Reeves voices the action-packed biker Duke Caboom.
Here’s what Toy Story 4 is about:
- Woody is no longer Andy’s toy, but Bonnie’s
- Bonnie creates a new toy named Forky, which looks more like trash
- The two encounter the doll Gabby, who wants to replace her broken wind-up box
- They meet the porcelain doll, which was actually given away by Andy’s little sister
The film has grossed over 1 billion USD and ranks 8th among movies that were released in 2019 (via Box Office Mojo). In comparison: John Wick 4, the most financially successful film in the John Wick series, has only grossed around 430 million USD.
Thus, the financially successful film featuring Keanu Reeves is not a movie we would directly associate with the actor, but an animated film where the actor is not even seen in flesh and blood. And even with John Wick, it wasn’t clear at the time whether Reeves would get the role.
Toy Story 4 was so successful that the animated film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2020.
One of the films featuring Keanu Reeves is John Wick. The appropriate trailer can be found on MeinMMO:
In the German version, we don’t hear anything from Keanu Reeves. Biker Duke Caboom is voiced in the German dubbing by Michael “Michi” Beck, a member of the hip-hop group Die Fantastischen Vier
.
Toy Story 4 was also well received by the audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a rating of 94 percent, while it has even 97 percent with the critics.
Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom
The role of Duke Caboom was tailor-made for Keanu Reeves. The actor fell in love with the film project and met with Pixar to better understand the making of the film.
Producer Mark Nielsen explained that the pose obsession of Duke Caboom originated from this conversation. In an interview, he revealed that Reeves suddenly climbed onto a table, stood in the middle, and the team then thought that this was the perfect behavior for Duke Caboom (via 3djuegos.lat).
Reeves revealed that he wanted to give Caboom the perfect voice. He considered how the character would speak. Therefore, Reeves gave him a rough voice that, according to his own statement, should convey energy and personality.
By the way: Toy Story 4 is not Duke Caboom’s first appearance. The action hero was briefly seen in The Incredibles 2 from 2018. However, he had no dialogue lines at that time, so Reeves wasn’t heard in the film.
Due to an accident, Toy Story almost didn’t get a sequel: Pixar accidentally deleted Toy Story 2 – A woman saved the film and is now being fired
