The most successful MMORPG from Germany had only 4 classes for 28 years – Now a 5th is to come

A MMORPG from Germany is more successful than ever, despite its old age. Now, around 28 years after its release, the game is even getting a new class.

Which game are we talking about? We are talking about Tibia. The fantasy MMORPG is developed by CipSoft in Regensburg and was originally released in 1997. Despite its old age, the developer reported record profits last year (via Gameswirtschaft).

Since its release, which was already 28 years ago, players of the MMORPG have only had 4 vocations – this is what classes are called in Tibia – to choose from: Druid, Knight, Mage, and Paladin. Soon, the Monk will be added as a 5th vocation. 

The class inspired by Buddhist warrior monks will be a melee fighter with support and healing abilities. You can see a short teaser here:

What can the new class do? The Monk relies on a mix of martial arts and mystical abilities. He can grant allies buffs and heal them while effectively dealing damage in combat with his bare fists – he is the first class in Tibia to primarily use the unarmed combat skill that has been in the game for about 20 years.

The new vocation also brings several gameplay mechanics with it:

• Harmony: Certain attack spells generate Harmony, which can be used by other spells for a power boost.
• Virtues: The Monk has access to three Virtues, of which only one can be active at a time. Each Virtue has a passive effect.
• Serene: If the Monk fights alone or against less than six monsters at once, he is in a Serene status (a state of tranquility), which makes him significantly stronger.

Why is the new class coming so late? Before deciding to introduce a new class into the game, the developers hesitated for a long time.  It should, of course, fit into the world and represent a strong option compared to the existing classes, but not overshadow any.

On February 25, there will be a first playtest for the Monk. However, he will officially join the game no earlier than the second quarter of 2025.
