Call of Duty: Vanguard offers a solid grind to unlock various weapon skins through numerous challenges. However, what you get after many hours of “work” is not worth the effort, especially in one category, argues MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn.
I am a big fan of shooters and love the cool skins in Vanguard, both for the operators and the weapons in the game.
And it is precisely the latter that annoys me right now, because one of the most coveted skins is so ugly that you hesitate to waste valuable time on it.
The diamond camos are terrible!
In the multiplayer mode of Vanguard, there are various weapon skins, known as “camos”. They are usually a more or less original version of a camouflage pattern. But those who grind stoically will eventually get the coveted camos from the “Completionist” category.
There is a flashy gold version of the weapon, or even a diamond look, for which you first have to grind through all the weapons of the category.
After the gold version looked quite cool, I was really excited for diamond. But what I saw left me speechless! Because the diamond versions of the weapons are all hideous!
Instead of impressing with precious stones, the diamond weapons looked like silver guns, to which someone had glued thumbtacks in shiny stone style.
Immediately, a picture came to my mind. A scene where a grumpy Vanguard operator picks up his child from kindergarten, and the little one proudly shows him how he “beautified” Daddy’s favorite weapon in craft class. Namely with lots of beautiful shiny thumbtacks.
And because he doesn’t want to hurt the little one, he now has to go to war with this hideous weapon and becomes the laughing stock of the entire company, the poor guy!
Especially hideous is how it looks on weapons with large round surfaces, for example, the Owen Gun. Furthermore, there’s even an article on reddit with over 400 comments where players vent about the terrible look of the gun (The image of this hideous weapon also decorates the title image of this article).
For other weapons that have many wooden parts, at least these are adorned with a really beautiful diamond pattern. Only the metal components are covered with those terrible thumbtacks.
Skins earned through hard work must reflect that
If you are now asking, “Well, then the diamond skins are just ugly, so what? Let the old Horn use other skins that look better,” I say, “But I worked hard for it!”
Because indeed, it is a tremendous effort to grind through all the weapon skins to eventually get the diamond camo. If I invest so much time in a task – even if it is a hobby – I want to enjoy the fruits of my “labor”.
And I simply cannot do that with a skin that is as ugly as the diamond camos. Such high-end skins should be real eye-catchers and not something to be ashamed of when you get shot holding it.
High-end camos are a powerful achievement that should leave one in awe. Instead, it makes me want to pull my hair out. This is very disappointing and takes away a lot of motivation to grind through all the skins.
Bugginess of camo challenges ruins even more fun
With some of the weapons, you currently might not even get the “pleasure” of the diamond skins because the challenges are bugged. There are weapon challenges for certain camos that cannot be completed with the corresponding weapon. At least this way, you are spared the diamond skin, but that is not optimal.
I really hope that the developers will fix this error soon and make more effort in the future to create consistently impressive high-end skins for weapons and not bug the challenges. After all, the grind for skins is an important motivation for long-term enjoyment in such games.
What I liked much better: The campaign of Vanguard is short and clichéd – and that’s exactly why it’s so good!
