During the group stage of the Worlds 2022 of League of Legends, GAM Esports faced Top Esports. While GAM Esports was already out of the tournament, Top Esports still had the chance to reach the knockout stage if they won the game. For the LoL team from China, it was all or nothing.
What is the situation? In minute 39, the players of GAM Esports initiate the fight for the dragon. They are actually trying to lure the players of TES into a trap by attacking the dragon. The jungler “Tian” from TES attempts to join in at the dragon but is killed by GAM.
As the Vietnamese turn their attention back to the dragon, “JackeyLove” and “knight” from TES join in and try to make an impact. They steal the dragon and manage to defeat the players of GAM. With long death timers of 54 seconds in the endgame, games are almost decided when several players from one team die.
However, the last player from GAM was revived just as the opponents were about to tear down the base:
- He tries to buy time until his team is back. He desperately wants to kill the only enemy minion to activate the protection for his base, which this one minion takes down.
- TES, on the other hand, aims to destroy the nexus now, to end the game quickly and secure their spot in the knockout stage. They strive to destroy the towers and the nexus just before the players of GAM respawn.

GAM Esports manages to actually defend their base and now tries to end the game themselves. The crowd is roaring like crazy, cheering on the players of GAM. As they tear down the base of TES, the players of TES are just being revived and arrive too late to defend the base.

Top Esports completely flies out of the Worlds
What is the game about? In this game, it was about advancing to the knockout stage. TES, one of the favorites to win the Worlds, still had a chance to continue in the Worlds. They finished the group stage with three wins and three losses.
That was only enough for 3rd place, causing a title favorite to be eliminated before the quarter-finals. Rogue and DRX, on the other hand, ended up with four wins and two losses, claiming 1st and 2nd place in Group C.
With a victory, TES would have opened the battle for the knockout stage and would have been in a tiebreaker with Rogue and DRX. This would lead to more games needing to be played to see who advances from the group stage.
In a tiebreaker among the 3 teams, it would have led to an unexpected battle, where Europe’s last hope would not be safe to advance. In the aftermath of the game, there were calls to question whether the last fight between GAM and TES involved a bug that denied TES the victory.
Who are the teams?
- GAM is the strongest team from Vietnam and claimed all titles in the 2022 season. The team had no chance of advancing with a 0-4 record in the group stage. Nevertheless, they wanted to show what they could do and not give up without a fight.
- TES was seen as a title favorite before the match days. At that time, with a 1-2 record, they had poor prospects for winning the group. The team from China had consistently been performing well this season and also secured 2nd place in the playoffs alongside the Summer Split title.
After the matchday, both teams were eliminated from the tournament. However, they were able to show what they were made of and that they did not come to the Worlds for nothing.
