“Dwarf Fortress” is considered one of the most complex games ever and comes to Steam after 20 years of development. The game is programmed so deeply that even cats can die in curious ways. The community on Reddit is excited about the remake of the game.
What game is it? The game is Dwarf Fortress. The player builds a fortress and ensures that their civilization of dwarves survives. The game features a huge game world, full of various civilizations, creatures, and cultures.
The game was developed by two brothers, Tarn Adams and Zach Adams. They started working on the game in 2003. Now, nearly 20 years later, the game is getting a makeover and will launch on Steam on December 6, 2022.
Here you can see the announcement trailer for Steam of Dwarf Fortress. In this, you can see how the graphics have changed compared to the original:
“Prepare yourself for the deepest and most complicated world simulator ever created”.
The player takes care of their fortress and must ensure that their civilization is equipped with sufficient resources. The dwarves need food and beer, and the player must fulfill their wishes to keep them happy.
However, the fortress is also attacked by other civilizations, wild animals, or the dead.
The game world has been built so complexly that the smallest details have been programmed into it. In an interview with PCGamer, one of the developers told a curious story about the cats in Dwarf Fortress and explained a mysterious cat death phenomenon that occurred in the game in 2015:
Taverns were integrated into the game where the dwarves drank alcohol. Some of the liquid spilled from the drinking vessels onto the floor. Cats entering the taverns ended up getting alcohol in their fur.
The developer continued: “And then I also wanted to implement grooming elements when people bathe […] Cats lick and groom themselves, and when I got them to groom themselves, I thought to myself:
‘Well, it’s a cat. When they lick themselves, they take back what they wipe off, right? They make hairballs, so they must swallow something, right?’ And so the cats became drunk as they licked the alcohol off their feet. Because they drank.”
As a result of the high alcohol consumption, the cats became sick, vomited all over the tavern, and died.
“Damn, it’s about time.”
How does the community react to the Steam announcement trailer? The Steam trailer was posted on Reddit. The community reacts enthusiastically to the news.
- missingpiece believes: “Damn, it’s about time. Dwarf Fortress is one of those “legendary games” that deserve a place in the Steam library. One of those games that are not suitable for 99% of people, but will still be “overwhelmingly positive” because it’s so great for that 1%.”
- Cotterbot said: “I played this game years ago, I only managed to dig in hell once, and even had a handful of times a somewhat successful colony. I will buy it even if I never open it. It’s such a passionate project that I have to support with my money.”
- The DiscoShark wrote: “My most anticipated release of the year. I played the original version a lot years ago, but I’ve held back since the Steam version was announced with a new user interface. I’m looking forward to getting back into it.”
When will Dwarf Fortress be available on Steam? On December 6, 2022, the remake of Dwarf Fortress will come to Steam. Besides the improved graphics, the game will also have a soundtrack.
Unlike the original game back then, the Steam version will include a tutorial that helps players get into the complex game.
