For another MMORPG, the lights will go out this year. It was considered by many as “Mobile WoW” – and apparently could not hold on.
In the world of mobile games, many things are short-lived, and some MMORPGs that seem to be doing well suddenly face closure. Such is the case with “Era of Legends,” which was often seen as a clone of World of Warcraft – just in a mobile variant. In a few days, the servers will close permanently. The game is thus facing its final closure.
When will the servers close? On December 27, exactly one day after Christmas, the lights will go out for Era of Legends – and likely permanently. The developers state that “it is time to bid farewell to the mysterious lands of Emonioels and embark on new, uncharted territories.”
The servers will be permanently shut down, and a resumption is not intended.
What are the parallels to WoW? When looking at Era of Legends, fans of World of Warcraft might have recognized some parallels, which often seemed more than just a little similar:
The art style is almost identical to World of Warcraft – comic style with exaggerated armor and large shoulders.
- The classes were almost taken 1:1 – including ideas like the Death Knight or Demon Hunter.
- Many buildings and creatures have significant overlaps with the look in World of Warcraft. At times it looks like only the texture has been minimally changed.
- Interface elements, such as raid frames, seem to be a direct copy without significant modifications.
Thematically, Era of Legends has done more or less the same as its spiritual predecessor – but that is also MMORPG-standard fare. It featured dungeons and raids, aimed to explore a vast fantasy world, or engage in PvP arenas.
Even though many of these features naturally appear in other MMORPGs, and WoW hasn’t invented most of them, a glance at gameplay videos clearly reveals which ideas were borrowed.
While there are also games that steal more blatantly from Blizzard, the “inspiration” in Era of Legends is quite evident.
