Senior Narrative Designer Lula Lucent talked in the latest video on Youtube about what changes are planned for the main story quest of the MMORPG New World. With Season 5, the “Season of the Guardian,” there are supposed to be some changes.
What content is there with Season 5?

Due to the expansion “Rise of the Angry Earth,” some logic gaps and changes in the story arose, leading the development team to decide in the first year of the MMORPG to adjust the main story in multiple steps. With Season 5, the story will finally reach its final state and will be as the developers now envision it.
These changes will be made to the story of New World
So far, some NPCs have been revised, who suddenly participate in certain missions or can be found in certain areas. Unfortunately, the team only had a limited time for this, which is why the developers had to fine-tune which content they wanted to change.
For Lucent, the process was complete chaos:
Take the best elements we already have, repurpose them, and lean into them. […] We knew where our penultimate storyline took place, Ebonscale. We knew where the absolute end would be, Shattered Mountain. I worked backwards, starting from our current locations and assets, and tried to give them life and meaning.
Lucent said that the narrative framework had to be approved by the team before the individual NPCs could be exchanged and resources requested.
An example of an upcoming change is Isabella and her vision of herself as the savior of humanity. The development team tried to portray her as even more threatening and in a more dominating position. Thanks to Rise of the Angry Earth, this revision is necessary.
Adiana Theron is also an NPC that will receive a revision. After the updates that were introduced after her first appearance, it makes no sense to involve her so directly in the main story.
The biggest revisions will be made to Ebonscale and Shattered Mountain. Here, the plot will be rewritten and NPCs will be swapped out. Some of them will be entirely new, while others will have been given a new role thanks to other content.
In general, the team made sure that the updates align even more with the expansion Rise of the Angry Earth. A fitting video about the expansion can be found here:
When will the final revision of the main story come? New World will receive its final polish for the main story on March 12, 2023. Because on the same day, Season 5 “Season of the Guardian” will be released.
