In the MMORPG Crowfall, which many fans have been waiting for years, there is finally movement. As Creative Director J. Todd Coleman announced, the beta for the game will start later this August.
Update August 11: Today the beta starts and the first players who have registered for free on the website should receive an email with their access data today.
When exactly does the beta start? This week, a new patch called “The Calling” was released, which has improved GvG fights, performance, and the experience for newcomers.
This means that Crowfall has achieved the goals of the alpha and is now ready for the beta, Coleman revealed in a press release.
This beta is set to begin on Tuesday, August 11.
How can you participate in the beta? The special thing about the beta is that for the first time players can participate who have not invested any money in Crowfall. Previously, tests have been held for years, but you had to buy a package for nearly 50 euros.
To participate in the beta, all you need to do is register on the official website. Participants will then be invited in waves. It may take some time before you receive your access.
Crowfall currently claims to have 70,000 backers (who have already paid) and 380,000 registered players for the beta.
What happens after the beta? The beta is mainly meant to stress the servers and bring in more players for that. The content of the game, however, is nearly complete and contains what was originally promised on Kickstarter.
Crowfall focuses on multiple campaigns instead of an open world
What makes Crowfall so special? Crowfall is not a classic MMORPG. According to its own statement, it’s about simulating the battle for the throne. The game uses elements from survival and strategy games, as well as different worlds, each with different rules:
- The Eternal Kingdoms are a social world. Here, players can trade and build their houses, but cannot kill each other.
- God’s Reach is a pure PvE world meant to introduce players to Crowfall.
- The Infected is a PvP world where three factions fight against each other.
- Dregs is the newest campaign and focuses on Guild vs. Guild combat.
With the exception of the Eternal Kingdoms, all these worlds only run for a limited time. They go through a cycle of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. At the end, there is always the Hunger, which devours the worlds.
Afterwards, a campaign starts over again, which is why you can “win” Crowfall. Additionally, the developers have the ability to change the rules of a campaign to ensure more replay value.
Crowfall is one of the most interesting MMORPGs currently in development for me, Alexander Leitsch. With the promised campaigns that are supposed to play out like an episode of Game of Thrones and the many different classes, it has made me so curious that I purchased access to the game years ago.
Although it will likely only appeal to a niche with its focus on PvP and “winning an MMORPG,” they could be successful in this niche as early as 2020. There is not much competition in the form of new MMORPGs this year, either.
