In League of Legends a large part of all players regularly travel on the map Summoner’s Rift. However, this map has a peculiarity. There are differences in elevation depending on where you are on the map. But those can destroy skill shots, and you don’t see at first glance what went wrong.
What is the problem? LoL is played in an isometric perspective – you look from above at your character. Even though you can clearly recognize obstacles by their texture, the walkable areas also have an elevation profile.
However, this elevation difference is not shown or calculated in the skill previews. This leads to some abilities missing, even though they were executed and placed correctly.
Players are now demanding on reddit that this elevation difference be removed.
Player shows with Gangplank how problematic the elevation difference is
What does the problem look like exactly? The reddit user Bibbybobsen published a video where he places his barrels as Gangplank and detonates them. If the barrels are in range, the explosion jumps to the other barrels, even if a wall is in the way.
However, the explosion does not work when the height causes problems.
What exactly is the problem? In the first 20 seconds of the video, the player shows how the barrels actually work. If the effect circles of the barrels touch, both explode. If they do not, only one explodes.
From second 22, he then places two barrels that touch each other but do not explode. Shortly after, he shows two barrels that do not touch, but still cause an explosion.
In the reddit thread, further videos have been posted showing problems caused by the elevation difference, for example a video with Ahri, whose charm significantly gains range due to the elevation difference (via Streamable).
Which area is particularly affected? The elevation differences are particularly noticeable at the transitions from land to river in the middle of the map. Besides the shown spot, the area behind the bush in the mid lane also plays an important role.
Players demand the removal of height
How is the video received on reddit? Many players are surprised by this fact. They apparently never noticed that there is this elevation difference.
However, nearly everyone agrees that this effect should be removed:
- The user DevastaTheSeeker says: “The height should never have been included in the game. It is so hard to tell where it actually exists, and the game is played on a 2D plane anyway.”
- Sash_lol writes: “The height difference never made sense in League. It’s rubbish, just a remnant of copying Dota.”
- The user I_Am_Caprico points out that Dota fixed this issue a long time ago: “Dota 2 figured it out a long time ago. The indicators clearly show the height difference. I don’t even know why LoL has height, as it doesn’t even relate to gameplay, unlike in Dota.”
Did you know that this elevation difference exists? And have you ever taken advantage of it, or did you stumble upon it by accident? Feel free to write it in the comments.
However, what LoL does right is dealing with hackers. We took a look at this in a special:
LoL has no hackers compared to other PvP games – But what is the reason for that?
