For 3 years, we have known that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a sequel. However, there isn’t a lot of information available about it. Now, the creator of the world of Cyberpunk has revealed some details.
Who is the man?
- Mike Pondsmith created Cyberpunk, the pen and paper game on which Cyberpunk 2077 is based, and its first edition was released in 1988.
- The “Digital Dragons” event took place in Krakow from May 19-21, 2025, one of the largest conferences for game developers in Europe.
- There, Pondsmith spoke with our Polish colleague Michał Mańka about Orion, the upcoming successor to Cyberpunk 2077.
This is what Pondsmith says about Orion: In a nearly 45-minute conversation, they generally discussed Pondsmith’s relationship with Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk 2077, and the developers at CD Projekt Red. The author explains that he was much more deeply involved in the development than many assume.
In the last question, Mańka wants to know whether Pondsmith is as involved with Orion as he was with the first part of Cyberpunk 2077 (via YouTube). The author says that he is not as strongly involved anymore, but still hears about some things from the development. In doing so, he accidentally reveals something about the setting:
I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment types. He explained what the new place in Orion looks like. There’s another place we will visit. A- I won’t say more than that. Night City is still there.

Still, Pondsmith shares a bit more about the new city and expresses his thoughts on it. He says: The city feels less like Blade Runner, which is one of his big inspirations, but more like “Chicago, where something went wrong.” For him, that works.
Creator accidentally confirms a fan theory
A few months ago, fans speculated that Orion would be set in Chicago (via Reddit). The reason for this is an advertisement that can be found in the city: “Travel from Chicago to Night City in under 3 hours. Worry-free. Starting 2080”
According to CD Projekt Red, the sign itself is not a hint at the sequel (via GameStar). However, the theory seems to be true nonetheless.
Whether Orion will fully take place in “Chicago,” or whether you can travel between the cities, we cannot say yet. From Pondsmith, we only know that Night City and the new city apparently differ significantly from each other.
Currently, there are no more new details about the successor to Cyberpunk 2077. In any case, the information is quite sparse, also regarding the release, which still needs to be announced.
