The trend in MMORPGs seems to be moving towards “Classic” servers. Even The Lord of the Rings Online is offering something like this, and it’s happening very soon.
While fans of World of Warcraft still have to wait until next year to play on the Classic server, The Lord of the Rings Online will kick off in just a few days.
A Classic Server for LotRO
This is what the LotRO Legendary Server offers: In The Lord of the Rings Online, this special type of game world is referred to as a “Legendary Server”:
- You start at the beginning on the server and experience the game almost as it was at release
- As it is a so-called “Progression Server”, content will be unlocked gradually and will not be available right at the start
- If you own the addons for LotRO, you do not need to buy them again, but you will have to wait until their content is unlocked during the “Progression”
- You must subscribe to play on the Legendary Server and interact with fans worldwide in a single world
- In contrast to some other Classic servers, the LotRO server provides all bug fixes as well as newer classes and races
When does the server start? Standing Stone Games, the developers of the MMORPG, have announced that the Legendary Server “Anor” will open its gates on November 8 in the morning.
Lots of work but the fans are excited
That’s why the Classic server is a tough piece of work: The developers explain that the code of LotRO is extremely complex and has become more complicated over the years. Due to thousands of old code sets, it is nearly impossible to adjust the balancing at the start of the game.
Therefore, a lot of cleanup work is necessary, which takes an enormous amount of time. This also makes it difficult to release new updates in good condition.
This is how the fans are reacting: A Classic server is usually well received by veterans. This is also true for LotRO. Many are looking forward to experiencing the game again as it was back at launch.
aYates says on massivelyOP: “Exciting! But I have to work all day! Can I call in sick?”
Jack Pipsam explains: “I’m tempted to try it out.”
