Back to the beginning is the motto of some MMORPGs nowadays. More and more online role-playing games that have been running for many years set up special classic servers that take players back to the start. This is also true in The Lord of the Rings Online.
Jumping into an MMORPG that has been running for over ten years like LotRO is not easy. It’s easier if there is a server that offers a fresh start. Whatever you call it, whether “Classic” server, “Old”, or Legacy server: It’s one of the MMORPG trends of 2018.
LotRO gets a special server
Classic is good: Many MMORPGs offer servers that allow players to start over. These include:
- Lineage 2
- RIFT
- RuneScape
- ArcheAge
- Even World of Warcraft will launch a Classic or Vanilla version.
This allows veterans to return to the origin of “their” MMORPG and newcomers to get a good start. Some MMORPGs then offer that the “Classic server” gradually evolves and receives new expansions. This is referred to as a “Progress server.”
LotRO is in on it too: Now the development studio Standing Stone Games has announced that it will launch a “Legendary” server for the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online. This will offer the following:
- It is a “Progression server” where content is gradually unlocked
- Players start all over again, just as they did at the release of the MMO
- It is a kind of VIP server that is only accessible to subscribers
- Many content is initially unavailable, such as legendary weapons or PvMP battles. These will be integrated with updates and addons
- You do not have to buy the addons again. They will simply be unlocked automatically when the server reaches the corresponding content timing
- It is a global server where everyone plays together
- The Legendary server is not a typical “Vanilla” server, as newer classes and races will already be available and it will include all bug fixes
The Appeal of the Old
What are the reasons for these “special” servers? There are many reasons why a classic server makes sense:
- An MMORPG changes over the years with updates and new content. Many players miss the experience from the beginning
- Newcomers find it hard to establish themselves on established servers where veterans have been playing for years
- New players get the chance to experience the MMORPG as those who have been there since the start did
- You do not feel overwhelmed by the amount of content that has accumulated over the years since it is unlocked gradually
What’s next for LotRO? The developers explain that the launch of the Legendary server will not affect the ongoing development of the regular version. The team is already busy working on new updates.
When will the Legendary server launch? A specific date has not yet been announced. However, it is expected to happen in the fall of 2018.
