A new card game in the “The Lord of the Rings” universe is about to launch. However, there are no booster packs here!
Digital card games have been on the rise for some time, and the Lord of the Rings wants a piece of the pie – but differently than many might imagine.
The upcoming game The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game focuses on single-player and cooperative content. Various adventures take center stage, which can be completed either solo or with human players. The players represent a small group of companions with whom certain goals must be achieved. Sometimes an attack from the Orcs must be repelled, sometimes someone has to be escorted – everything is represented by cards that depict battles against enemies or dungeons laden with traps.
Visually, the game strongly resembles Hearthstone, which many fans of the offline version of the Living Card Game criticize because it doesn’t do the game justice.
However, The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game has some major differences from other card games like Hearthstone or Gwent. There are no booster packs or “loot boxes”. Instead, players buy a complete set of cards each, along with the associated adventures, which can then be mastered solo or with friends. It is always transparent what you get for your money.
However, the game currently appears to lack a PvP mode. Following the offline version, cooperative action against the “NPCs” and the tough challenges of the adventure is the focus here.
A fixed release date for The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game has not been announced yet, but the game is expected to appear on Steam in the first quarter of 2018.
