Riot Games has released new information about the World Championship (Worlds 2019) in League of Legends. According to this, the event not only broke the previous record set by Fortnite but also generated some other incredible numbers.
Here are the new numbers: in a blog post, Riot, the company behind League of Legends, published new figures regarding the Worlds 2019 that ended in November after analyzing some data.
According to these, the LoL Worlds had an “Average Minute Audience” (AMA) of 21.8 million viewers. The analysis service Nielsen defines AMA as “the average number of individuals watching a TV channel measured minute by minute during a specified period” (via Invenglobal).
The Worlds were watched for a total of 8 billion hours, spread over five weeks. In total, according to Riot, more than 44 million viewers tuned in simultaneously at peak times.
These numbers surpass the record set by the LoL Worlds on Twitch. Here they have broken the record for the most simultaneous viewers, a record that Fortnite had only recently claimed. The semifinals were also the most-watched eSports match of all time.
How are the numbers generated? The stated numbers include not only Twitch but all platforms through which the LoL Worlds 2019 could be watched. The broadcast took place in 16 languages across over 20 platforms, including China, and possible television broadcasts which could only be captured by Riot itself and not previous analyses.
The immense number of hours watched results from the number of viewers (for example: Two viewers watching for two hours each results in four viewer hours).
A survey found that many fans watch without playing themselves.
The successful LoL Worlds 2019
This is how the World Championship went: Over the course of the five weeks, 120 games took place in Berlin, Madrid, and Paris, with over 60 events in 36 cities worldwide.
No American team survived the group phase. Europe performed slightly better. Fnatic was eliminated in the quarter-finals and G2 Esports made it to the finals.
The winner of the tournament was FunPlus Phoenix, which received not only the prize money but also an expensive watch from Louis Vuitton.
