A Special Engraving
After Samuel L. Jackson already took on an important role in the Jedi Council in Episode 1 as Mace Windu, he was also supposed to appear in Episode 2. As he revealed to Graham Norton (via YouTube), he met with George Lucas specifically to discuss his lightsaber.
Originally, Jackson only wanted to participate in Star Wars. The character itself would not have mattered to him. He would have been satisfied with a Stormtrooper role. However, he became the Jedi Mace Windu. For the big fight scene in the arena from Episode 2, Jackson obviously wanted to fight.
He asked George Lucas for the purple lightsaber. Lucas initially did not want that, but Jackson argued: I am the second coolest Jedi in the universe, after Yoda.
Lucas thought about it and then gave him the purple lightsaber. However, the lightsaber had a little surprise for Jackson.
The original lightsaber from the films is engraved with BMF
(Bad Motherfucker
). This is a reference to his role in Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. The wallet of his character in the film also says Bad Motherfucker
.
You can see the engraving on the lightsaber in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on YouTube. The clip can be watched from about 06:40.
Meanwhile, many other lightsaber colors have been added since Mace Windu’s blade. These can be seen not only in the films but also in comics or different series. If you’re interested in a top list about Star Wars, you can check this out: All 15 Star Wars movies ranked
