Yesterday, on January 7, 2024, the 81st Golden Globes took place in Los Angeles. Major films like “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” won awards. For the first time, an anime, “The Boy and the Heron”, managed to take home a prize.
What has the film achieved? In 2007, the category “Best Animated Feature” was introduced at the Golden Awards and awarded to Cars. In the years that followed, animated films repeatedly won the title – but not a single anime.
Until yesterday: For the first time, an anime, The Boy and the Heron, directed by master director Hayao Miyazaki, won a Golden Globe Award.

What kind of anime is The Boy and the Heron? In The Boy and the Heron (original title: Kimi-tachi wa dou ikiru ka), a boy travels with a talking heron to a wondrous world. There, he hopes to see his deceased mother again.
The anime is by director Hayao Miyazaki, who is known for great masterpieces like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. He originally intended to retire after The Wind Rises in 2013 but returned for The Boy and the Heron.
