Europa Universalis V, the latest game from Paradox, has received a major update. This delivers several new features and mechanics – including one that punishes you if things are going too well.
What kind of game is it? Europa Universalis V (short EU V) is the latest installment of the strategy series developed by Paradox Interactive. The Swedish studio is known for highly complex strategy games with detailed world maps; EU V takes it to the next level by going much deeper into detail than all previous Paradox games.
Europa Universalis V was released on November 4, 2025, although in a rather unfinished state. On March 5, 2026, about four months after release, Patch 1.1 Rossbach came out.
In this video, the developers give you an overview of all the changes that Patch 1.1 brings:
Europa Universalis 5 now punishes you for slacking off
What’s in the update? It consists of many bug fixes, but also new content and gameplay mechanics. Among other things, there is a new game rule with which you can adjust the aggressiveness of AI players. Additionally, there is a brand-new “Complacency” mechanic.
You can find the full patch notes for Update 1.1 in the developers’ forum (forum.paradoxplaza.com).
The Complacency mechanic is designed to simulate the slow decline of an empire that has faced no external threats for a long time. Gameplay-wise, it will primarily ensure that you should never get too comfortable.
Why should you never get too comfortable? There are various factors that influence Complacency. If your empire lacks a real rival to keep you on your toes, it increases.
If Complacency is too high, it has negative effects on your empire and its population. You are therefore encouraged to always seek out new strong rivals during the course of the game and not just rest on your laurels. This should make the game somewhat more challenging, especially if your empire otherwise would become too overpowering.
