During the week of August 16 to 22, there were many discussions surrounding the largest western MMORPG World of Warcraft. Additionally, we introduced 4 new MMORPGs set to release in the coming months. We at MeinMMO summarize all the important news of the week for you here.
The highlight of the week: In this week, there was a lot of talk about WoW, the subscription numbers, and the entry. The MMORPG did not fare well:
- YouTuber Bellular explains: ‘WoW has less than 2 million active players’
- New players have no chance to understand the story of WoW
- MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus writes in his column: WoW is dying for me right now – But unfortunately too slowly
For several weeks, we have also reported that some big streamers and YouTubers have migrated from WoW to Final Fantasy XIV.
The scandal of the week: Ian Taylor composed large parts of the music for RuneScape. However, he has since been fired and convicted. He confessed to having acted sexually aggressive towards a girl under 13 years old: RuneScape: Composer fired and convicted – After assaulting a girl.
The discussion of the week: MeinMMO author Matthis Dillmann particularly enjoyed the factions in New World during the beta. However, not all of our readers find factions and PvP good. More about this here: A feature in New World gives me the feeling of finally belonging again in an MMO.

This week in the major MMORPGs:
- In addition to the problems with WoW, there was also good news. With patch 9.1.5, several features that players have urgently wanted are coming.
- The Elder Scrolls Online will release the new DLC Waking Flame next week. Until August 30, you can also play the MMORPG for free.
- In Guild Wars 2, the first elite specializations from the upcoming expansion End of Dragons can currently be tested. So far, only 3 of them should be known. However, details about the other specializations have now been found through data mining.
- In Final Fantasy XIV, the event “The Rising” will take place from August 27 to September 9 (via FFXIV).
This week in the smaller MMORPGs:
- Bless Unleashed was released on August 6 on Steam. There, it peaked at over 76,000 players and is still very popular two weeks after release.
- Lost Ark has released a new class in Korea and broken the previous player record with it.
- Swords of Legends Online is looking for testers for upcoming content, but we find the offer quite cheeky.
- On August 15, the new free-to-play MMORPG Ecila was released on Steam.
This week in the MMORPGs in development:
- Elyon has just started its second closed beta. You can currently win beta keys on MeinMMO.
- A new browser MMORPG promises you to earn money while playing.
- The new MMORPG Reign of Guilds features battles with 150 players – And you will become the Saint.
- RISE reminds of a mix between The Witcher and Kingdom Come and will soon start its first beta tests.
- Mortal Online 2, a PvP MMORPG, will start in October in early access on Steam.
- Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen has given insight into the development steps before the alpha launch (via PantheonMMO).
